I need to completely remove an OEM version of Windows 8 and install a new version of Windows 7 provided by Microsoft.

I am not allowed to install Win7 because the Win8 partitions are protected.

Suggestions?

How do you mean?

Boot the win7 installation media - go to drive options (advanced) and delete the unwanted win8 partitions.

I think you have made a wise decision - just out of curiosity, how did you get the win7 install media from MS ?

Clean Install Windows 7

I booted the Windows 7 media from the DVD provided. There is no provision for removing the partitions. They are marked as protected.

The problem is that I can get to my W7 machine from W8 but not in reverse. I need to be able to see everything on the W8 machine's HD. MS was the one who offered to send me the install media for W7, free of charge. I didn't ask. They even sent it overnight FedEx. What service!!

FWIW - I built my first PC 31 years ago. Even soldered some parts. I got a MS in CS in 1990. Hard to stay on top of everything happening in the industry.
