Hi

How do I change just the *name* of a file type - i.e. without changing the default program?

For example in Windows Explorer my Excel files are called "Microsoft Excel Worksheet". And my Word files are called "Microsoft Word Document".
However is I make the "Type" column in Windows Explorer narrow, then for both types of file all I can see is "Microsoft..."
[This is *profoundly* unhelpful - what arrogant vanity by Microsoft! Do they ever actually run usability trials on this stuff?]

So although I still want .XLSX files to open with Excel I want to change the name / description that appears in the Type column to just "Excel Worksheet" (or possibly "Excel Worksheet (Microsoft)" or similar)

Thanks

you would have to change the full name in the registry

If you don't want to poke around in the registry, the program FileTypesMan lets you do this. Just open the program, select the extension you want to edit and change the Description to whatever you want it to say.

Brilliant. Many thanks.
