How Can I Force Snipping Tool in Win8 to act like Vista/7?

Oct 18 — Nov 14 I'll read the screams of joys as people vent about it's shortcomings but more importantly; I'll be reading for tips, tricks & discoveries from within 8.1 in the forums.
That also allows the first 2nd Tuesday update to fix the few minor blemishes it has.
Then I'll swing that hammer and install 8.1 on another partition if I can.
As long as MS doesn't take my graphical start screen away ... I will be happy.
I read that description in someone else's post last week and hope they aren't mad about me borrowing their term.

Good ole' practice of delayed gratification. Very wise! I will think hard on that one also. 8 is very stable for me. I don't want to mess things up for my new Office Pro.

Unless I misinterpretted what I've read, we can continue using 8 for awhile, then be upgraded to 8.1 later without choice. I'm not afraid of change and actually look forward to the natural start screen shortcut (start button) and ability for more tile custumization options. Hopefully they'll build option for a natural 'All Apps' shortcut on taskbar too.

I know you're not afried as you stated. I apologize for the confusion. You are correct. 8 will be supported for a few years from what I understand and there is no "forced" immediate upgrade to 8.1, although one will have to upgrade eventually since the support is short lived compared to past OSs.

Allow me to state that to me the word "upgrade" is a rather confusing word to use in computer technology when obtaining & using one OS then obtaining & using another OS. One can purchase another edition to fresh install and continue to use the old edition without violating the EULA, which is a means of upgrade > Or one can purchase the "upgrade version" of a new edition where one cannot use the prior edition so as not to violate the EULA.

I'm thinking we should all start using the terms "upgrade with a new edition" and "upgrade to a new edition" or something of that nature. Perhaps someone has better terms to use.

8.1 is a totally new and free edition for those that have purchased 8. I'm thinking it's not like buying the "upgrade to a new addition" as where the prior OS cannot be used, but rather "upgrade with a new edition" where it can be used.

Lol! Therefore, my ultimate question > Which is it?

BUT
IF you have 8 on C: and the 8.1 Upgrade on E: what does MS actually do ??
If you replace your hdd; you have to reinstall the original program then the upgrade.

When I installed 7 OEM to a new hdd on C: then 8 OEM upgrade to E
There was no problem. When I boot up it just asks which program and whether I choose 7 or 8, it displays on C:

It's only one key but then again, we own both programs & we only use one at a time. So.....

I was following them for a while, but I haven't had time to catch up on the RTM install threads. That's the fact that we use the same key? Not understanding that for it's treated as a new edition, is it not? We should get a different key for 8.1.

If it's true that we don't, wait till I see Gates and Ballmer again! I'm going to give them a real what for!

It's still not as easy as before, but hey, at least it saves having to move the mouse.

Snipping Tool on WinVista and Win7 opens in a 'ready to snip' state. Currently on Windows 8 on my PC, when I open Snipping Tool I have to manually press 'new snip' before the program enters it's 'ready to snip' state. Can Anyone help?

Working with 32bit Windows 8 Pro. Taking the snippingtool.exe from a 64bit Win7 c:\windows\system32 obviously gave me the error message that the program couldn't run on my current OS/processor.

Taking the snippingtool.exe from a 32bit WinVista c:\windows\system32, taking ownership of the Win8 file and renaming it, and copying the WinVista file in it's place did not work. The program does not open when double-clicked, even when I try running it as an administrator and running the troubleshoot compatibility wizard on it as WinXP, WinVista or Win7.

Having to press 'new snip' after opening the Snipping Tool is completely redundant, because if I didn't want to make a new snip, why would I have opened the Snipping Tool? I need a way to fix this so that Snipping Tool acts the way it did in WinVista and Win7 on Win8.

I get that. That's when I use PrntScrn. In any case, I still think it's ridiculous to at least not give users the option to have it immediately active, but whatever. I commented on what I fully realize is an old thread because I was googling the same thing (hoping there was a way to make it the default option without having to hit Ctrl+N) because other people had the same question, and I hadn't seen Ctrl+N suggested.

For example, I read one recommendation to use Ctrl + Shift + 4 (as in Mac OS X) but I know that in MS Excel it is used to format a cell in the currency format.

You might be better off starting a new thread rather than resurrecting one from years in the past. OSX uses command + shift + 4 anyway, not ctrl + shift + 4

Just my choice.

Yes, I took your recommendation and downloaded it. It appears to be a useful tool I must say, sort of Snipping Tool on Steroids, but I haven't yet fathomed out how to get the Text thing to actually place text on the clip.
