Where you getting the PC from?

Custom build or is it in the process of being shipped?

Reason I ask is if it's being custom built, tell them to install it ASAP before delivering to you.

If you don't install and activate by 31st they key expires, as pcRat said. there's no other way.

Let's repeat: if you get one of the free keys (for Win8 Pro owners), it must be used to activate WMC by Feb 1, 2013. The key will be worthless in one week (from today, 25 January). In fact, if I should need to re-install Win8 after that, I'd have to buy a new WMC key.

It's not as generous a freebie as I'd hoped.

Sounds like a good system backup is in order.

While the 8 Upgrade is forever. The free media center add-on is not.

It does not just add Media Center to Windows 8.

Your "Windows 8" is now your "Microsoft - Windows 8 Professional with Media Center" and your Windows 8 license number has been changed to reflect the difference.

So if I have to reinstall Windows 8 P which number do I use the one in the bios or the WMC number to activate it?

I believe you would reinstall Win 8 Pro then go to the Store to reinstall Windows Media Center. Checking a box saying you already have a key to avoid paying for a new one.

Don't take my word for it tho, my professionallism ends at professional rookie !

To key or not to key? That is the question

Gosh???

I'm not sure, but I believe that all the code/files for eHOME/WMC already reside on your HDD.
When you go to Add Features, there is quite a list presented to you.

Some features require a key others don't.
Games
RIP Listener
Telnet Client ...etc etc

I don't think you 'download' any of them, you simply choose to install/ADD the feature.
If the feature requires a Product key you will be prompted for one.
If it does not require a key it just installs.

Happy Hunting!

I received an email today reminding me to install WMC before January 31. I have already done so some weeks ago.

I also recieved that email. The funny part is I've upgraded Windows to Windows 8 Pro with WMC back in november. When I try to follow up the instructions in the email it simply is not possible to add features to the installation because they are already installed.

I guess that Microsoft is emailing everyone just to be sure. A simple line of "If you've already installed the software it is not nessecery to reinstall it" would have been a lot clearer IMHO.

I think

If you burn a complete backup after you install Windows Media Center you'll be set when reinstalling.
Otherwise if you had 7, installed the 8 upgrade and installed Media Center from the Store. You will probably have to:
  1. Reinstall 7
  2. Upgrade to 8
  3. Go back to Search, Settings, Add features to Windows 8, type Windows Media Center, & already have a product key

Your key will be registered from this special and it should be good for the life of 8 Upgrade product key you registered it to.

I think once you install and activate WMC (before the deadline), you can install it again at a later date if needed. At least that's what I've read in other threads here and at other sites.

See this article by Ed Botts for good info on this: Deadlines loom for cheap Windows 8 upgrades and Media Center Pack keys | Ed Bott

I checked with a Microsoft spokesperson and was told that the keys will continue to work after the deadline passes, and that they will work later if you need to reinstall Windows. The e-mail messages are mostly a reminder to upgrade, I was told.

First, the new license key replaces your existing Windows 8 Pro license key. Make sure you keep a record of the existing license key so that you can use it if you need to reinstall Windows 8 Pro.
