I have a new computer with windows 8. My other computer has windows 7. This one has all my photos and files that I want to be able to open on windows 8. I have the homegroup set up and have shared the photos and files on windows 7. In the homegroup on 8 I can see the folders, but when I click on one to open it I get the little box telling me it can't be opened and I need to get permission from the owner. I am the owner,so How do I do that or how can I fix it so I can open the folders? I thought I had given myself permission when I checked the box to allow everyone access.

From what you are saying write access isn't set in the Homegroup permissions. This is the default setting to only allow read access unless you change the permission.

I should also point out that Windows 8 has a bug where the write settings go back to unshared after a reboot, this bug has been fixed in Windows 8.1.

You need to right click a Library folder, choose "Share With" then choose "Specific People" then just click the drop down arrow and add the Homegroup option which should already be there, right click to select read/write access. Now you will be able to access those files. I removed my email and name from the screen shot.

Don't add the Everyone share here or else Users in the workgroup will also have access to that Homegroup Library. Conversely if you want the Users in the Workgroup to have access then add the Everyone share. :)
