How can I solve my Hard Disk Drive (HDD) storage problem?

My Samsung ATIV Book 9 Plus has a 128 GB SSD, with 40 GB storage space left. I've noticed that my PC eats up a large amount of memory. I have all the native windows apps installed plus my 3GB of files (documents, photos etc.) and the Google Chrome, MS Office 2007, and Prezi softwares - no more, no less. I've done cleaning up my PC, the storage space remains at 35-40 GB. I assume it has something to do with Samsung bloatware apps. With that said, I uninstalled the Samsung apps and still the problem exist. I do not like it to reformat because I'm afraid I might lose the Windows OS product key. I'm suffering this problem for months now, how can I fix this? I really appreciate your help.

As a starting point have you forced a trim on it? Also when you go to Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Programs and Features it will tell you at the bottom exactly how much your installed programs are taking up.
Do you have large video files on it or other large data files?

EDIT: You can also run a disk cleanup on it.

In addition to the above. Download: TreeSize Free Portable and run it. This will give the details of all the files and their sizes
Post a screen shot then we can recommend what need to be cleaned.

@popeye what do you mean by forced trim? I have 2.14 GB of currently installed programs. I don't have any videos stored in my files, only 3GB of documents and pictures. Every week I run disk cleanup utility and still my storage space remains at 40 GB. Thanks for the welcome. HEHEHE.

@topgundcp I downloaded the software you recommend, thank you. The ROAMING folder consumes large amount of my storage space, correct me If I'm wrong. How can I fix this? HEHEHE.

128 GB SSD, with 40 GB storage space left.

If this is your boot drive, then I don't see a problem. Windows, drivers, apps and your data files are consuming about 90Gb. That is a lot less than a lot of people.

Most of the space (22.3 GB) occupied by Apple Device backup (Iphone/Ipad). Apparently, You have a lot of Music/Video/Pictures files from your Apple device and when you run Itunes, it's backing to your PC via syncing. So if you subtract 20.3 from 60 GB then your C: drive would reduce to about 40GB which is about right.

Personally, I do own an Iphone and an Ipad but set Itunes not to Sync. Instead I use a freeware program called "Apple Itools", you can google and download it. This freeware does require to have Itunes installed to use some of the backend DLL's from Itunes and It does allow users to Backup/Restore from/to your external HD or to a folder of your choice by using drag/drop or by Export/Import from the Menu. In addition, you can create ringtone, use your Iphone/Ipad as and external HD, edit your contacts, slide show etc... in the form of WYSIWYG. With Itunes, you don't have much control and the backup is encrypted and you must use Itunes to Backup/Restore. Here's a screenshot of "Apple Itools" application:

@topgundcp Ok. Now I know why I suffer from this problem, thank you. HEHEHE. How can I delete these Apple file back-up I have in my PC? I'm not that tech savvy by the way, I'm sorry for asking a lot of questions.

Run Itunes and follow the steps from the screen shot to delete the backup files. Note that on step 4, I don't have anything backup so it was not listed any and the Delete Backup button is grayed out but on yours, the backup will be listed under Device backups.



NOTE: by doing this, you'd have no backup from your Apple device and as said in previous post, I use Itools for my backup of Video/Music/Pictures etc...

Can I delete AppData as well? I don't have Autodesk, Mobogenie, Lumion, VMware, and etc. installed in my PC.

@topgundcp sorry, it took long for me to reply. HEHEHE. I followed the steps and deleted the apple device backup. After doing so, I gained 67.5 GB storage space. (1) If my PC has a 128 GB SSD storage with a total size of 100 GB usable hard disk space, what just happened to 28 GB? (2) Based on the photo below, where is my 32.5 GB? I already transferred all my personal files to my Seagate backup. HEHEHE.

1 - On the first screen: hiberfil.sys, Pagefile.sys etc... : these files are Windows system files, you cannot delete them. However, Hiberfil.sys can be deleted if you are not using Hibernation. By turning off Hibernation, Windows will automatically delete this file. The same for pagefile.sys, it you turn off pagefile, Windows will also delete this file.
2 - On the second screen: Under Program Data. If you no longer have MobilEdit and Autodesk in your PC then you can delete these 2 folders, otherwise leave them alone.
3 - From disk management screen, you have: 499MB + 300MB + 17.27GB + 1GB + 128MB MSR (hidden) so it is approximately 19 GB taken away from 128GB (17.27GB is your factory Recovery partition of your Windows Image). That leaves about 100GB usable which is correct.

Note: In computer world 1K = 1024, so for 128GB SSD, it only shows around 119.2 GB



4 - 32.5 GB occupied by: Windows system files + Program files you installed + temp files, cache files etc...
