Hey, Windows 8 doesn't suck

padd-tablet-ipad-surface_imgur_610x269.jpg

For months now, various pundits have been deriding the upcoming Windows 8 as the next Vista. People have made mocking videos showing older people thoroughly confused by Windows 8's Metro tile interface. Indeed, the Windows 8 Metro interface is radically different than the traditional Windows desktop. It's a touch interface.

Yet the same pundits that slammed Windows 8 on the desktop are now lauding Microsoft Surface, the Windows 8-powered touch tablet that Microsoft announced Monday. Since the Windows 8 Metro software hasn't changed, what exactly is so different? After all, Microsoft is demonstrating the exact same interface on touch-enabled hardware. And all of a sudden, Windows 8 is making sense.

Quite Honestly, I stopped using the Start Button years ago.
On Vista and 7 I use AppLauncher for the things I use the most. And it works in 8, obviously.
Fantastic Side Bar Gadget, I would have to say, Best Side Bar Gadget and a must have.
I don't have a huge problem with using Win8 on my desktop or laptop.
I don't find (yet?) it too difficult to move around or do things. I am not that put off by metro (yet????).

Once on the Desktop I forget I am using Win8.

The new Explorer ribbon is fantastic I think. Still getting use to it, but I like it. Wish it could be moved to 7.
My only other wish is that it was customizable.

I have a Win7 phone, so, the synch stuff and access to things on both are actually a lot better than I thought

I was very anti-cloud, still am, to much lesser degree though.

Fact is, Cloud is here and getting bigger, it isn't going away.
Embrace it or get left behind.

Meaning, if you are an IT Professional or someone who works on or with computers, going forward, many of these things will be working with, on and using will be cloud based. This may not be obvious or apparent to many, but it is here and growing.

In terms of cloud storage, I use Skydrive to keep important documents, that paid off well for me a number of times but I don't trust cloud in keeping my other personal files.

I also see cloud apps as useless on places far from any zones where once can use Internet and I'd rather hold data on my own storage, plus I don't wanna be logging into some account just to use an app and I will not give in to their reasons why they would force to embrace cloud in years left to come.

For the casual Home User, this won't completely happen for some time, however, the vast majority of people already are/do use cloud for many things. Think Webmail, how many people are actually using an installed mail client. It's far less than you think.
WebEx, GotoMyPC, LogMeIn, on-line backup services, these are all just developing models of the future.

But, vast majority of people have smart phones now, they use more cloud services off that than anything else.

iPads, and (Surface/Slates, soon) and Tablets are making their way into business in a big way. VDI is being researched, developed and implemented in many forms. Trust me. It's closer than you think, and will be quite prevalent in the next 2 years (yes, that is my prediction).

We can rail against the machine, but the machine is us, the consumer, the majority wins, and those of us against Cloud services (to any degree) are the minority.

I really do dislike this push towards 'cloud' computing.

I don't trust it, I don't trust corporations, I don't trust hackers, and I certainly don't
trust our governments.

Nor am I thrilled with the concept of 'pay-per-use' programs/applications from the cloud, I
believe in paying for my software once, not every time I want to use it.

I insist that my files, applications (not 'apps', I hate that word), and programs remain
on my machine, under my control. Just to make things clear, I have nothing to hide,
but equally I have nothing I wish to share without my express permission, or to lose.

If MS continue in this direction, I can see myself staying with Win 7/Office 2010 for some
time to come. Either that, or going wholly open-source/freeware.

Neither do I need or want a tablet. AFAIC, they are nothing but a cross between a very
expensive toy and a fashion accessory. Basically neither fish (phone) nor fowl (PC).

My Android phone is more than adequate for the limited amount of mobile computing
that I do (I'm decidedly not the 'social-networking' type, nor do I spend all day on
YouTube). For anything more 'serious' I take my 'small' laptop (Acer AS5735/Win 8).

And I can't ever see myself buying a touch-screen laptop or desktop. The whole
concept is counter-intuitive. Also, I can't stand a dirty/smudged screen.

On my smart-phone, I love the concept of the touch-screen. But it does nothing
for me on a 'real' computer'. And I can't see that changing for me in the foreseeable
future, Win 8 notwithstanding.

If it works for you, that's just great. But it doesn't for me.

Windows 8 does grow on you, once you have tweaked it to suit your individual tastes
regarding start menus etc. I'm starting to quite like it, and there is much to like about
the OS, even if you don't like Metro.

But, it is the direction that MS is pushing users, especially desktop/laptop users, that
concerns me. It's somewhere that I have neither the need nor the desire to go.

Embrace it or get left behind.

Paying for "Cloud" services will just encourage "them" to shift more things to the "Cloud".

The only way to "nip this in the bud" is to refuse to use the service and hopefully the providers will go bankrupt.

If you look at my first post here , I was one of the first to talk abort the Microsoft Conspiracy to cloud everyone.

I think so too. also I think Windows 8 is a step forward for an ultimate control by Microsoft: they want the customers rent their software and put everything in the cloud. One day they will remove completely the desktop, we will use our PC only to get online and we will have to use online software only. What will happen when every documents, every spreadsheets will be on MS servers and the only way to have access will be to use Office 360 ? . This means Linux, Mac, Android , will not be an option anymore.

Yes and NO
YES:-MS have got it absolutely right from a pure business point of view i.e. increase the revenue stream, provide a constant ongoing revenue, even after installation; stay in business.
The future sales to Joe public will revolve around tablets and smartphones at my guess for 90% of sales.
Corporate and developers will continue with desktops for the hard work but will also issue tablets for mobile computing. Joe public will use the cloud and spend $$$£££ on apps; MS cannot afford not to be in this market.
If they are not successful they would not be able to develop future op systems; where would we be now if they had not moved on from Windows 3.

NO:- Desktop users with multiple applications, open multiple screens want to continue with what they have already to avoid a new learning curve. Any body care to guess at the total worldwide man-hours involved in getting to grips with the new system?. Corporates already have a "cloud" it is their own servers think vpn. You are in charge of your own destiny.
Even forgetting about the privacy issue of uploading sensitive date to MS what happens should have a "cloud" outage and lose all your data. They will stick with Win7 and maybe migrate from XP or W2000 if they have not done so as yet.

The relatively simple solution is to enable win8 (setup option) to boot direct to the desktop and restore some of options:- start menu, shutdown restart buttons etc., addressing the majority of complaints around.

I guess I would use W8 if not to expensive and not have to pay additional money for standard items from 7 they have removed. Use the "cloud" NEVER. Use windows live mail leaving all emails on a microsoft server NEVER. I have only cocked up once since windows 3 by failing to restore my system ie data and programs when a transformer at the end of my street blew up bigtime taking out 3 computers at once when my backup systems were live. Since the advent of low cost external drives I am hopefully imune to that as a keep a copy at my sons house.

What we really want is a service pack upgrade to W7 that incorporates the underlying code that makes W8 faster in desktop mode, it is really good.

Highly tuned super-cars use different systems to the standard family saloon why should PCs be any different.

Technically, the producers of Star Trek: The Next Generation could sue apple for product infringement since the PADD in Star Trek had its name ripped off for the ipad. The i part came from apple since they like to ruin centuries of English grammatical rule, the pad part had to have come from PADD.... :geek:

And I would bet that the PADD would be successful in that case since Samsung even used that as reference in their own patent dispute with apple.

Yes.

So why are they risking so much by angering their existing user base?

They are trying to get a hold in the tablet market - that is difficult enough - it is quite incredible the way they have behaved towards their customers.

Some have suggested panic .

Hard to think of any other reason.

It's simple, change. Something new and something fresh to keep developing the Windows platform on. If it didn't happen now, it would had happened.

That doesn't answer the question - no surprise there.

If they allowed choice - they would do well., no question of that.

The deliberate removal of choice is appalling.

Very dangerous, counterproductive.

It must be a fascinating time over at Apple HQ. They must be sorely tempted to attack.

Risky for them - they would need to bring in a laptop range at lower prices. Even with a different branding strategy, there is a danger it could contaminate their premium brand.

But what an opportunity to seize the desktop os market as well.

I'm all for change if its a positive thing but Windows 8, or more specifically Metro, doesn't strike me as a positive change. Not if you're going to make it the de facto standard across all computing devices. There are a few that like it but it would seem that a fair amount more don't like it. Especially on a none touch device. Obviously to you that "does not compute". IMHO, its going to be a very long time, if ever, before everybody moves to owning just a tablet, slate, or laptop and abandons the desktop PC.

But what an opportunity to seize the desktop os market as well.

apple stands NO chance to seize that market since they've failed at that time after time. Even then, Windows 7 is still there for use until 2022. For some, that will be fine, for others, Windows 8 will be fine.

Reading all four pages thread, and all other similar threads, I am just wishing some MS guys have their glance to all threads that require their attention. I don't certainly wish they take it all, but at least your discussion would worth something to MS in making their final touch to Win 8.
I am not convenience with metro app, but I work with win 8 every single day since the first release, installed on my second PC in the office and home, exploring how it affects my day-to-day living with PC. This just to make sure I'm not in position of judging without sufficient reasoning. And I come to a thought that metro still need to be something better in the next release.
