Goodbye, Windows 7 – Hello, Windows 8

I installed the final version of Windows 8 on my primary production machine last night. This was a leap for me after having been so terribly disappointed with the Consumer Preview. Today, I stand before the world a man of a changed mind. Windows 8 is, thus far, my favorite version of the operating system.

About a month ago I decided to buy my first laptop which qualified for the $14.99 upgrade offer. I redeemed my offer shortly after Win 8 became available for purchase and saved the ISO then created bootable USB media.

I also decided to swap out the spinner for a SSD before upgrading and Oh Boy is the installation and file transfers a lot faster.

Also the bright colors and white explorer background are more suited for this laptops display capabilities than Win 7 was as everything is easier to see & read.

The other good thing is that the rest of the hardware is better than the Intel graphics.

Ok, so I just tried installing Windows 8 to its own 30 Gb partition to try it out, with the rest of my 128 Gb SSD reserved to back to Win 7 if needed. Looks like I'll just be sticking to Windows 8 instead, everything seems a lot faster and I never used the start menu anyway. I cant stand metro though, but as long as I still have file explorer and opera stuck to my task bar I'm happy with it.

I'll have to reinstall it to the full SSD now though so I dont need to keep on changing the drive letter for everything from C:.

Windows 8 is very very zippy on a Sata III SSD, even more than Windows 7 was.

I just bought Win 8 Pro online ($39.99), downloaded the .iso and burned the image on DVD. I think I read that the product key given to me was good for "up to 5 installations..." Did I read that right, or is this a typical single-use installation?

As with all Windows products, one key for one computer.

You can move the upgrade to another computer as long as you remove it from the previous computer, for example return the original computer to Win7, if the next computer has XP, Vista or Win7 you can use the upgrade on it.
It can only be on one computer at a time.

I am inclined towards the upgrade but at the same time i am not.

In all reality that is for you to determine. For me it was nice change from the old (classic) style GUI. If you have a copy of the RTM or consumer release then play with one of those for a bit in a VM to see if it something you might want. If you haven't either of those you can go onto MS and download a copy of the Enterprise Edition which is good for 90 days. Good luck.

You lost me Dave....Why is C: so important to you.

my main drive with Win8 on was K:

now it is back c: because of a clean install (computer problems)

Windows 7 & 8 will change the active OS to drive letter C, so when Win7 is booted it will be drive C, when Win8 is booted it will be drive C.
Just let it take care if it, there are no problems with it.
