New to this forum. I have Macrium Reflect free working on my win 7 machine and on my win 8.1. I'm using version 5.1 64 bit. I sent the exe to my brother and he got it working on his win 7 but both win 8.1 machines do not find any drives to back up except for the drive he wants to save the backup on. Anyone have an answer for this?

I have the paid version 5 working on both of my Win 8.1 machines.

As Koukol noted, download the free version again directly to your Win 8.1 installation. But, before you install it uninstall the Macrium you have installed and reboot the PC. Then install the new download and see if that fixes it.

I would suggest he try downloading it himself or at least reload your download.

+1. On Macrium Reflect Free page it states the current version is
5.3.7299 (2 April 2015)

Also watch for it to be bumped up to v. 6 soon.

Edit: The reason your brother may not be able to see other drives is he may have different hardware. I have used several image backup programs from various publishers. As I change machines, even in the same make as I bought a series of HP Media Center towers over the years, I found that this imaging program would not completely work with the new machine and that one would.

The only way to know for sure is to download the various ones and try them. Also try the paid trial versions. If you find a trial version that works perfectly it may be worth buying that one. Or it may be a clue that soon their free version will inherit all the hardware support in the next release. ;)

Yep, the "About" item in Macrium shows 5.3 but is actually 5.3.7299, guess they don't bother with the last four in the display. I just hit the Check for Updates in the Other Tasks menu and it will say if the latest is installed.

Oh, it does show the last four as build number.

Thank you for all the quick responses. I have been using the 5.1 version because I thought if I updated I would then be on a 30 day trial version. In any case I updated mine today and have it running right now. I have advised my brother to uninstall the version I sent him, reboot and then install the new version 5.3.7299. It seems strange that the old version works on my laptop but not his and we both have the same make and model. I will mark as solved or post later.

Your brother might have the GPT HD in his PC and the old version might not support GPT type HD.

Yes our hardware is different because I replaced the hard drive in mine with a SSD as soon as I got it. His laptop and new desktop both have regular drives. I haven't heard from him yet but will update or mark it solved when I do.
