FREE Kingsoft OFFICE pretty good better than LIBREOFFICE

Hi there

Vmplayer is fine - both on Linux and Windows.

BTW most Linux Live CD's allow you to create some "Persistence" space so you can add a small amount of software and make changes - otherwise the easiest is just to choose INSTALL from most of the LIVE CD's. There's enough software usually on these - saves downloading and installing the whole distro -- often several GB of stuff - probably most of which you don't want anyway.

Cheers

So do I just start installation from the Mint in VM Player and no repercussions to the rest of system ? Something like Vegas," What's in VM, stays in VM"

Correct, other than using some space for the virtual disk drive. I have default location which puts them in Documents folder. Never bothered to change it.
Oki, thanks, as soon as Reflect finishes making full C: disk backup I'll see about Linux installation

Hi there

For Linux users here's one way you can make a PORTABLE copy of Windows too (any version not just Windows to Go) -- the whole kybosh runs from an external HDD / USB stick even if there's no HDD in the computer !!! - Ensure though you allow Legacy boot as the system is based on installing a bootable Linux machine which then runs Windows as a VM -- on a decent external HDD - especially an SSD or USB3 device the response of the Windows system is fine - even running Photoshop or Office.

You need to install the NON UEFI version since most of these Linux installs will install the boot loader to the INTENAL HDD if you are creating a UEFI system -- you probably could fiddle around with it but most installs are now "One Click" type which don't give you much customisation opportunities. The NON UEFI version allows you much more freedom in specifying where to write the boot loader and you want it on the EXTERNAL device, not on your main HDD which could hose up your Windows Boot as it will fail if you don't have the external HDD at boot time !!!! - So use the NON UEFI version. This works for most common Linux Distros.

Test Kingsoft office either in the Linux machine or the Windows one. (Or both). Remember the Linux version is ALPHA.

Ok, Linux Mint 17 installed in VM perfectly, no if I could just figure out how to bring other HDDs on line from it. Must be something y vith this VM because this same Mint does do that from USB.

Hi there

1) Check Network connectivity - ensure the VM has the Virtual Network adapter connected
2) Ensure Firewall settings allow data transfer
3) Try SAMBA for Linux <==>windows connectivity. Can your Windows machine at least detect the Linux VM (and the other way around). For Linux Mint there's a graphical SAMBA GUI configuration tool -- Google for it.

Virtual Network adapter is there but not connected.
Anyway tried to install Kingsoft office /.deb) in Mint thru Package Installer and it could not, said something like it's corrupt and that there were "broken dependencies" and to run "sudo apt-get install -f" in the terminal window, when I run that command it asked for system password but would not let me use numbers which I set as password, would accept letters only.

Hi there

No it's NOT a DTP package -- It is basically equivalent to Ms Office Student and Teacher edition -- EXCEL, Word and Power point equivalents, no Publisher, Access or Outlook -- thought that was clear from the original post.

MS Publisher I use instead of Word because it's easier to integrate all of the elements of the rest of Office package. If I make an Excel table in it I can work with it without actually opening Excel and that's just a part of it. Working with pictures is easy enough with all the features Paint provides but without actually opening it. For fast and dirty DTP it's easier to use then Corel for instance and surprising range of stuff can be done in it. You can even make a nice blog and save as HTML.

Hi there

WPS office is the new "Kingsoft Office". I believe EXCEL now does support some vba macros too. Even without Macros you can code some pretty complex functioning spreadsheets that work perfectly in Office 2010 as well (haven't got office 2013 but I'd imagine it should work if it works in Office 2010).

Note though some third party add ins to EXCEL aren't compatible - but I gave up using the addins once I switched from the 32 bit of office to the 64 bit version as they didn't work in that too.

The post wasn't about whether I PREFER office 2013 as someone has posted in the thread - but merely to say if you are looking for a compatible (or very reasonably compatible) version of Office that IMO is far better than LibreOffice then this one seems to fit the bill. Note also we are only mentioning the typical versions of Office that people use - EXCEL,WORD and POWERPOINT. DTP programs (such as Ms Publisher) are different and aren't in any case included with Student and Teacher editions of Office which are the cheaper one's most people will have installed unless they got the full suite via a work or college program. Remember also that there's no email client included with this either - but who knows that *might* come in future.

Anyway another shot of a complex spreadsheet running in WPS office.

Cheers
jimbo
