OK, thanks for that understandable explanation. However, since the product key is embedded in the BIOS, I wouldn't trust Belarc Advisor to reveal the true key and that may just be your issue here. So, with that said, can anyone confirm my suspicion that the good old Belarc Advisor is no longer a reliable source and/or confirm that it still works for that intention?

I would be pretty mad if this was the cause of all the trouble. I didn't know how to extract my product key and came across Belarc. What do you suspect it does? Interfere with permissions? Please advise me if you do get more info regarding your suspicion!

Update: I don't know how this works but Acer apparently offers some sort of eRecovery service that can get you back to factory defaults. It requires one to enter a serial number and where it goes from there, I cannot say but it sure looks interesting:

I was considering the option of resetting my computer to defaults as a last resort - not too sure if a clean wipe would solve the problem.

However, I can not tell you specifically that it does not work and that's why I asked the other forum members to confirm my suspicions. However, I do remember other forum members trying to use several methods to recover their key and several failed. In fact, I'm not sure I ever remember any that worked. Now, I could be all wrong but wait for others to respond; however, its a darn shame that most manufacturer's (if not all) abandoned the practice of placing the key on a label like they did before. Good luck.

I see. Yes, it's sad that the product keys are no longer given explicitly - however, a quick search on the Microsoft forums suggest that it is actually MS's initiative to remove the labels so as to prevent key stealing for Windows 8. Oh well! Thanks anyway!

Ok, thanks for that. So, have you considered trying that eRcovery link to see where it leads? I'm guessing you'll be able to download a recovery ISO that can be placed on a USB drive (per pictures on website). Moreover, I'm guessing (hoping) it will be a free "one-time" download because of the one-time restriction. Anyway, I would definitely give that a shot while you are waiting for other responses. Good luck.

EDIT: I did a bit more googling and found out that I'm supposed to have a folder in this directory: %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform

My SoftwareProtectionPlatform folder was missing and I created it. There is supposed to be a file inside it, tokens.dat, which stores all the activation data, but it isn't there. I'm going to try to restart my computer after creating this folder to see if Windows will put it there for me - perhaps it was because right from the start, this folder didn't exist.

EDIT 2: Turned out restarting did nothing, no tokens.dat file spawned. I'll wait for your advice!

Tokens.dat is actually in the C:\Windows\System32\spp\store folder.

I have some changes to my errors:

not enough memory.png

This comes after:

Navigating to the C:\Windows\system32 folder
Selecting properties
Clearing the 'blob' from the 'Read-only (Only applies to files in folder)' box by clicking on it until it's plain white.
Clicking on Apply
Making sure that the radio button for 'Apply changes to this folder, subfolders and files' is set, and click OK.
Accepting the Administrator prompt.
Clicking 'Ignore all' when the error pops up.
Rebooting twice.

I have 16GB of RAM so I don't see how this could happen...

A not enough Quota error is unusual - but not unheard of (mostly in Vista, for some reason)

A couple of reboots usually sorts that out.

I'll try rebooting again, but I think I've done it thrice without solving the error.

After resetting my computer to defaults, nothing would work. I guess I'll leave it as such - after all, I am able to do my work just fine.

I'll just leave this here but I won't mark it as solved because it really isn't, but maybe some intermediate steps here may help others who experience the same problem.
