But you say you can get run programs? And your Drive manager looks OK, the drives are mounted. The Shell is messed up, Probably Shell.dll and Shell32.dll

Was this an upgrade from Windows 8 to 8.1? There must have been some corruption that was transferred over in the upgrade, this is why I never upgrade from one OS to another, very rarely. Shawn's right, you'll have to do an In-Place Install- This is one thing DISM is not fixing. So, you can dock me a rep point, I was wrong.

But did you click right on that arrow? The arrow is pointing directly toward the right, it needs to be pointing down. Just click on it, right on the icon, in the middle of the image.

Just click right on top of that grey arrow and I'll bet your drives pop right out.

I have a hunch that will work, but just in case it does not, you can use Free Commander to get around on your system:

Other than refreshing Windows, you might create a new administrator account to see if it works properly while sign in to the new account or not.

If so, then you could use the new account instead.

Thats odd, cos on Windows 8 which I just checked, that arrow expands or hides all drives. You really got to hit it right in the middle to see it work, it's kind of difficult. I got it to look exactly like his Pic, but I was able to expand it or hide it. You got to hit that icon square in the middle for it to expand out. I'll check it again, but I am positive I got it to look just like his image.

If none of this stuff is working, I'll wager he has a virus. Normally, when Explorer has been affected by a virus, the Explorer just crashes, I've never seen it just show nothing. Maybe this is something new- There is a Fake Google 'Desktop" being distributed in those Ads at the top of Google Results, I just had the privilege of eradicating one of them, it gets all through the system in four directories, and the idea of it is to PREVENT you from deleting it using Explorer. I;d do a thorough Virus Scan, but only the very latest version of TDSSKILLER reveals the infected Google Desktop app.

So, the mystery is why does it say "This PC" on both sides of the navigation pane, something is very wrong.

I'd check for a virus, then do an IN-Place Install. Something is preventing DISM from working, how does DISM work, if his windows 8 sources were bad, then the DISM sill just replace the bad files from a bad source. If this was an update done on what was originally Windows 8, then I think MS has been distributing bad installer files over the net. We need to point his to a good ISO Image for an In Place Install, cos I think his entire OS install is corrupt.

It might explain why this forum has had nonstop activity since the moment 8.1 came out. I installed straight from an ISO image and I have no problems. So where can we find him an IOS image for the version of 8.1 he has?

just formated my drive and installed windows 8.1 pro again Norton internet security 2014 running too.Everything is perfect now.Thanx for nothing guys...

Well if you look up at the message I just posted, this is what We were suggesting, if you updated from 8, it was probably a bad set if installation files.

Fresh install is always better anyway

no , my windows ISO is not kaput but i played with my c: permissions and after that i was facing these problems...now i fresh install 8.1 again and took my c: permissions just with mouse right click.

I had not seen that you had done that, sorry. Usually DISM can fix this cack, but there is a point where stuff gets too messed up to fix like that.

Windows 8 has lousy security on everything and it you mess with it, it fs you up.

Well, it is supposed to be a free update, glad you got it.

Anyway, sorry we couldn't help you get to that solution quicker, I was hoping it was something simple. And if ya know us, we'll post all kinds of things to try. I'm not that familiar with 8,1 yet, I know 8 like the back of my hand I hate 8,1, most people here love it though.

Yah I heard ya, I upped from Windows 7 Ultimate, and it was loused up. I used DISM to fix the problems that got transferred from 7.

On my other machine, it was a fresh install that's how I like to do it, and I havent had any problems on that system for months.

We keep posting over each other its like letters that cross in the mail, heh. OK glad you got it fixed, we all learn from this stuff.
