Embedded Product Key (8.0) for 8.1 install

MS don't give any useful error messages now. "Something Happened " would be hilarious if it wasn't so annoyingly useless.

At least you got a code. I think that means bcd stre is not configured/has missing information.

We can find out.

Startup repair makes a backup of bcd before repairing it. Just compare the backup with current bcd store to see the difference.

It is in the "boot" folder, called BCD.Backup.0001

What really intrigues me is fact that after install of 8.1 that I can no longer restore 8.0 from image and get it to boot. I am restoring the EFI partitions and everything.

I'm trying to imagine what a drive image restore is missing that manually installing 8.0 would catch. Like I said, once I manually loaded 8, I was able to restore my 8 image...no problem.

Theog's BCD store backup seems to indicate it lost track of the System partition and the Windows partition and shows unknown for device and OS device which should show the System partition and the Windows partition. But opening it on my system may give erroneous readings.

Is this thread now basically about the Paragon backup software? If it is, does that software have some setting concerning Partition IDs and whether to keep them the same or not?

Theog appears to be using a Windows to Go install, so not sure if that would behave differently from a PC install.

@Saltgrass
A Windows to Go was made on the test rig, therefore listed as a boot device in the UEFI/BIOS firmware.

Computer won't boot on Win8 UEFI restore - Wilders Security Forums

Currently the Paragon Software current versions are not supported for the 8.1 operating system, so if you are running into issues please be aware that you have the ability to back up the OS, but you may run into issues with other operations. There will be a new version released at the end of the month, which will support the 8.1 operating system.

It seems if you open a BCD store on another computer, it will show unknown as the actual partition in the store, so that part might be ok.

I have noticed some problems with the Windows Image backup on my system with two independent installs. It seems there could be confusion as to which install is being backed up and which EFI partition should be used. I had the Windows 7 and Windows 8 images in the same WindowsBackupImage folder (different computer names) and the Windows 7 one looked normal, but the Windows 8 one only had one file. I received no error messages when I made the Windows 8 image. This does seem to happen during the creation of newer images over prior ones, but I am now putting the images on separate partitions to see if it corrects that situation.

@Theo, were you booted into Windows To Go to copy those bcd stores for us?

Hard to tell what is wrong with the bcd.backup.0001

Afaik, Paragon and the other thing Theog used have their own bcd editing systems, they don't use windows bcdedit.exe. If you use the windows install dvd /recovery drive, then it does use windows own bcdedit.

Just a guess, but perhaps the 3rd party programs cannot access the 8.1 efi bcd store when running in boot time mode. Could be a strange permissions issue.

NO.

When you make a Windows to Go or install Ubuntu, you will have a boot device listing in the UEFI/BIOS firmware until you fully clear the BIOS by removing the battery.

It is odd that Paragon 12 has a bigger problem with Windows 8.1, than SSR Desktop Edition has.

Looks like all Back up software needs to be tested.

I just wish Paragon would get an update for the Backup and Restore product that I own. I don't have the HDM suite, so it's still not good yet for me.

Hey guys,

Just wanted to take a few seconds to report that I purchased a 3 pack license for Paragon Backup and Restore 14 and this has resolved all restore issues that I had under Windows 8.1. I no longer have to manually correct the blue screen 34 error and then run bootrec /rebuildbcd after laying back down a Windows 8.1 image.

I got my 3 pack license for Paragon for $35....based on how well the software works for me, this is a steal.
