Hi, This is my first post in any forum. I have an Asus with win8.1. From n old PC I have a HDD with XP. There is a program on that disk, for which I have no serials, no installation disk, nothing. Is it possible to boot from that external HDD or any other way to use just this program. It is an aacountant program, so I do need it.

not sure ,I never used easybcd ,maybe there is away to do it ,but I don't think so ,I will google easybcd and see what its used for

can't i use Easybcd?

EasyBCD is a tool for editing the BCD -- which is only present on Windows versions Vista a newer. It can't be used natively with XP.

That said, you could try using the Add New Entry function, add an entry for XP on the external drive -- and see if that works.

My guess is that EasyBCD might let you add it, but even if it does, it's not going to work.

I have a thought...and it might not work either as I have never used this method I'm going to mention. I believe VMware has a program that will allow you to make a Virtual Machine of an existing OS installed on a hard drive. So, in theory, you could use this program to make a VM of your XP disk, install VM Player, import the VM Machine that you just created, and you should be able to run your program...if it works.

First and foremost, make a clone of your existing hard drive before attempting any of this.

Good luck!

to the best of my knowledge ,the simple answer is still NO! and I have been studying /repairing /building from scratch since 1999!but I am no expert ,just a little bit above a novice

Hi, thank you all. You are just great. I found a solution, bought a new motherboard and will reconstruct the XP system. But this is ridiculous, you should be able to boot from an external HDD, though some of the drivers may not work, but at least the core should be able to load. Yes, I am a lay person, but this sounds logical. Thank you once more.
