Solved Dual Boot Win7/8 - Win 8 goes black after a short time

I've recently installed a dual boot, Windows 7 and Windows 8. The installation went fine but then after a very short time my Windows 8 Screen goes black. I had to press the power button to exit. When again rebooting into Windows 8 the "blue window" shows and the spinner goes around for about 20 seconds, then all goes black.

I've checked the Power settings and ensured the "Turn off display" was "never". I also updated my Video drivers thinking that might be the problem. Both to no avail. I've done a "Refresh" and a "Reset (which took 3 hrs). Again, all was fine for a short time, but while exploring the OS, again the black screen. Would anyone know what else I could try to fix this Windows 8 problem. Thanks so much.
 
perform all windows updates

reboot when asked

do more updates..

If still black screen, uninstall video drivers and let windows install generic drivers for now, see if that resolves your issue..

I queried the above question about two months or so ago and received suggestions (thank you everyone) which I followed... re-formatting the hard drive during the new installation, trying generic video drivers and doing Resets and Refreshes. None of that worked and still doesn't. The installations do complete as before, but I don't have enough time to download new updates to perhaps correct whatever problem(s) there are before all goes black after a few minutes. As I stated before I have to hold down the power button to exit.

If this is a clue, once the screen goes black and I revert back to Window7, before loading, the File System on ALL drives, including C and the Windows 8 partition has to check for consistency before Windows 7 boots up.

I've been quite busy and haven't had a chance to try re-installing again until now. Thinking the problem might have been the actual HHD I used for previous attempts (it was a SATA external drive which by the way I previously used for a dual boot Vista/with Win7), I then created new partitions on 2 different USB connected external drives and attempted to install. It wouldn't do the install on either one. I received messages "Setup does not support disks connected through USB or Firewire,.... my USB drives are connected directly to computer not a hub. So I'm forced to use the SATA created partitions for the installations.

NOTE: if it makes a difference, through Disk Management, I've deleted the Win8 installs from those partitions then re-created a "New Simple Volume" before trying again. I even tried creating another partition on C but it wouldn't allow me either saying it was dynamic drive

I have two OEM Windows 8 installation disks, I've tried both. HELP! I don't know what else to try nor can I imagine what the problem could be. Thank you!

Usually or rather, Sometimes a Black Screen is a sign of non activation. Can you get into Task Manager from the black screen? Hit CTRL ALT DEL. If you can, pull up a command prompt and type 'SLMGR.vbs /DLV" and see if your windows is activated.
 
Thanks for the suggestions. JustATest what happened was originally in Disk Management My C and D (Recovery) partitions were color coded (blue) Primary Partitions and stated as such but when I shrunk C and created that additional partition All partitions on that drive because Dynamic (greenish/yellow). Any Idea why? There's no selection to change back as far as I can see. Can it be chanced back?

XwePeonW I reinstalled Win8 on my one of my SATA external partitions but before I could get to "activate" all went black and Ctrl+Alt+Del did not work.

My advice is to post a screenshot of you current disk management view. I personally have no idea why/how it got changed to a dynamic disk but I sense that might be an issue. We have a few great partition folks in this forum and Theog is usually the first one to respond so load up that image and see who responds.

I believe the "System" and "Tools" were created on C: back when I installed diagnostic software from H.P. Included is E: DVD with the Windows8 Disk still in the tray. M: partition is the partition I created when shrinking All partitions on C are Dynamic.

Hi Leelord. That image may be too small so can you please try this method of capture:

Go to the disk management view and open to a full screen view
Depress the Windows Key + the Print Screen key together
(your screen will flicker momentarily)
Now go to your Pcitures folder and look for a sub-folder named Screenshots
Open Screenshots and a large image (eg full screen view) should be there
Upload that larger image please
 
I tied several times but that didn't seem to work or me so I did a Ctrl Print Screen and pasted it in the ole standby "Paint" and saved. I hope this image is better. If not I'll find another way. Lee

Still too small IMHO.

Open disk management to a full view
Hold down the Windows Key and press the Print Screen Key (not sure where that is at on your rig)
(your screen will flicker monentarily)

If saving the full screen view via ctrl + print screen keys, make sure you save it as a jpg file (not gif) and do not resize it.
 
Yes this is what I did (Windows Key + Prt Scr) And the screen did blink but unfortunately this is no Screenshots folder under Documents\Pictures. I even searched my drive for the a folder "Screenshots" and nothing. Let me see if I can find another way. I'll resize the png to (1600x1200) which is a larger format. How's this one?

If this one is no good I see you can right click on the image and SAVE IMAGE to your computer then open with whatever you choose.
 
I'm so sorry, I have to get to bed it's getting late. I'll check tomorrow. THANK YOU so much for being so patient with me in my attempt to enlarge this Computer Management Image. I also think I'll start a new thread with a similar subject since this one has gotten so long, I'll include another image with that. I'll try to figure out why the Windows Key + Prt Sc doesn't work for me and Screenshots don't appear in My Pictures. I'm running Windows7 64bit if that makes a diff. Thanks again. Lee
