Do You think that Windows 8 is that bad?

Windows 8 has been my main OS for quite a while now. Absolutely no problems with it. It feels like a good upgrade from Windows 7 for me.

Except that Linux isn't pushing the gullible into the clouds - then before long, start charging for it.

I believe the response is :

"D'avec leurs têtes". (Off with their heads)

"Qu'ils mangent de la brioche." (Let them eat cake.)

I answered "No", It's not that bad, but not the paradigm shifter that Windows 95 was, that I hoped it would be. Apps are for the most part likely to be irrelevant for the PC user, Metro and search just waste time, and are a backward step, although the start menu was not great either.
In all I have rethought how I use windows, so Windows 8 has made me better - by avoiding the hopelessly redundant ways to do things and just focusing on a single way to do things. I even use the command line and shortcuts more than I did before and it saves time. It is getting more like using Linux with every new version, which means I spend less time using Linux, so MS must be doing something right!

Speed looks good. Can't get used to the metro interface. With the exception of Windows 7, I hated every new OS until I got used to it. I avoided Vista altogether and ended up liking all the others, with the exception of ME. I'm not sure how much effort I'll end up putting in to learning Win 8.

I have a thought about situation in which in time W8 is running inside hundreds PC in a big company that do not need it to connect to internet. For example, in my office there are around 140 PCs, connected to Linux server, with only 20 of them need internet connection. So when the times is coming with W8 I think the metro apps will sit mostly idle.
The simple thought is that there should be a version without metro apps.
And priced less of course ;)

Voted No.

Same thing with all new OSs, it takes a while to learn and become comfortable with it.

There are differences in all versions of Windows, if there weren't then there is no reason to make a new version. Are the new versions better? It depends on your usage and preferences.

Change is inevitable, new hardware/software, advances in internet usage (be it good or Bad), consumer preferences.
Any business has to stay relevant and competitive and adjust to the market. They don't always get it right but, they do have to explore options.

What would you do if you were in charge of making the new market dominating OS?
Trying to accommodate everyone is easier said than done.

In the end we all have a choice, which is the best option, use what you want and feel is the best for you.
The 'Market' will correct itself to the requirements of the majority.

I think Dave raises a good point. I catch myself wishing, in effect, for Windows 7b, which I believe is more properly referred to as a Service Pack. If they came out with Win 8 and it was exactly like Win 7, who would bother?

Surely that's always been the point behind Win8. All MS are doing is playing catch-up with (paid for) downloaded apps and (paid for) cloud computing. Under the hood there are no doubt some very good developments trying to get out but first impressions count and it could just do a Vista with all the negative publicity.

Win8 is not a huge leap forward in the phone/tablet market - we will have to see how they get on with the Nokia Lumia phone but so far sales have been disappointing on this side of the pond even though apparently it is a good phone and system. But it's not good enough to pull folks away from the iPhone and Android based devices.

To force feed Metro onto the desktop without an option.....

The metro apps aren't much use on a desktop but otherwise Windows 8 is great :) the Start-Page is a huge improvement to the old Start-Button although it will take a day or two to get used to.

The only problem I can foresee is that the Start-Page does need some house keeping, when you install a program it can put loads of unwanted icons on the Start-Page, these can very easily be removed, if you don't it will get very cluttered. Very novice users will then find it hard to find the program they want.

Agree 100%. The problem is it's all about first impressions. I got Vista working just fine but that was after I invested some time clearing out any junk that was irrelevant (for me). Most people aren't prepared to spend the time doing that and especially the media - hence the **** stuck and I know folks that rejected Vista even though they hadn't even given it a try or even seen it.

I've voted No, but that is based on the amount of bad press I had read before I installed the CP.

However I have a big IF that goes with that "No". Being a small business owner Cloud Computing is far too risky for me, for data protection reasons I will not publish my customer contacts to the cloud and therefore need to be able to synch my phone to my pc locally. I still use Windows Phone 6.5 for it's Outlook Integration (such as is it).

The single password thing scares the hell out of me. One password to protect the cloud giving anyone who manages to get it access to eMail, Contacts, Calendar, Documents, Photos, Music, Twitter, Facebook, Flicker & Xbox Live. There's an awful lot of eggs in that basket.

With all the hackers in the world hating MS and everything they stand for how long until the MS cloud gets hacked and everyone's data is available to anyone who wants it?

So as long as Win 8 comes with Mobile Device Centre, Remote Assistance and the ability to avoid the cloud I'll be pretty satisfied, but IF not then I'll be sticking with 7.

From a developer's perspective I voted "Yes" - Win8 is "that bad".

I would not have reacted that way had MS developed a separate O/S for the tablet market. Instead, MS has decided to disturb a well known architecture and affect everybody including desktop users. If you're not headed to a touch-screen for your main system then of what benefit is Metro? None at all.

On top of that, they have gone out of their way to render the development IDE (Visual Studio) as a flat, colorless, hard-on-the-eyes development environment. I can certainly understand fitting the back-end so it emits WinRT code and from which you can build Metro applications but to screw up the front-end of the IDE as they have just doesn't make sense. I'll stick with VS2008 thanks.

Metro should have been developed as a subsystem to the desktop, not the other way around. I doubt very seriously that it would have been of much great difficulty for MS to offer the ability to run Metro as the default based on an option setting.

When I used the Dev preview and CP I was constantly feeling distracted with the fact that everything "flows" through Metro. As I said above, why should a desktop user ever see metro in the first place, let alone have to switch back-and-forth to it during the course of their work?

I won't address what I think of Metro from an asthetic viewpoint, just the idea that they're disturbing the desktop to make it an all-in-one solution is what irritates me. I think I will be on "Seven" for an awfully long time and that's OK: it's solid as a rock.

I don't know why you think you have to keep switching back-and-forth? I don't have to. I only use the Metro screen to launch programs, which is far easier than finding programs on the old start menu. The programs I use all the time I pin to the task bar.

Hard to say how it will sell to the masses.

Amazing what rubbish can be forced on people if it is marketed craftily.

I expect the press will give it a rosy reception to try and bolster the market as a whole and protect their jobs.

There's a lot of on-line advertising being done by MS atm for cloud computing so surely you're not suggesting that would play a part regarding the rosy reception are you? LOL
