Do you like the Windows 8 Release Preview?

I really don't get it. There is a ton of discussion here about the Metro interface in RP and how bad it is. The only time I spend in Metro with the RP is the time to click on the desktop icon. There are SO many ways to avoid using Metro and just stick to the desktop, why are you folks who are complaining about Metro bothering to use it at all? I don't touch Metro and I haven't touched the Start Menu in Win7 in years. Who needs them? Why use them?

I could just as easily say "What's the use of Metro and live tiles on the desktop when you never see it?" "What use are full screen metro apps on a 24 inch monitor?" "Why have metro /at all/ on a desktop?"

Seriously, why should a desktop user /have/ to employ ways of "avoiding" an interface that serves virtually no purpose there in the first place?

OMG,
I think apps are great!
I think the metro is great!
I only use it for apps and links to the metro IE.

All desktop stuff is on the desktop.
Apps serve a great purpose.

They are FUN !
Opinions vary...
They are interesting and informative as well.

I like Windows 8 ... but it still is buggy ..it's like using a windows phone with live options ... a lot of good features menu's and tools... I just hope it holds up , I think windows made the right call on this one.. But i will wait for the big release before i get all gaga over it.. but all in all a good job.

Thanks Vince53.

I agree with you Legacy7955 and FSeal about having to "avoid the interface"

I think it was a mistake for MS to make the metro a start menu replacement.
Installations should not have their links applied to the metro.
The metro can get very messy.
It has to be cleaned up which is an annoyance.
And to make matters worse, all links are plastered on one page, very messy !!
The tiles are always sliding around, so one has to FIND a tile !
also.. program link tiles are boring to look at.

Using the metro as a start menu is a problem.
Always flipping back and forth to launch programs is a pain.
And searching a hundred tiles outside of visibility is really a lot of work.

Which is why, there SHOULD be a start menu on the desktop.
...and boot to desktop option

You might be missing the point about live tiles. They came from the Windows Phone as a way to personalize information for you. It also prevents you from having to troll around in the app itself just to find some updated information.

I decided to give my desktop install another go. This time using onboard sound and as little 3rd party apps as possible. It's essentially the same setup as my laptop software wise.

It no longer Blue screens during shut down, but it still freezes often. Different errors in event viewer on Desk vs Laptop, so at least this time I've got a lead, but damn it's tedious.

If we must go the metro app route - I hope they are at least reasonably priced. Nothing more than $5 would be acceptable.

Even though I use W8 on my laptop daily, I'm still largely ambiguous about it. That's not a real good sign as i'm sure plenty of others are in the same boat.

Just installed W8RP a few hours ago.
It won't install my sound driver (exactly the same as W8CP).
At least they got rid of the fish and doubled the number of colours you can select.

W8DP has been the only usable version so far.
All of the benefits and none of the drawbacks (at least after the Registry hack is applied).

I will like Windows A LOT more than I do now once the Desktop has been metrofied to match the rest of the OS. Also, I want some consolidation of the Control Panel and PC Settings. I'd much love to be able to FULLY customize the Start Screen as I see fit. I want me red tiles and a black background! :D

I like it a lot better since someone posted a link to Classic Shell, which is easy to find with any search engine. They give you four choices, and I rejected the one for Explorer 9. The Start Button is better than the Vista Start Menu I had installed
