I hate it when I double click a file and Windows 8.1 pops up a message saying I have other apps that can handle this extension.

I disabled this notification through GPEDIT.MSC, it works now when I open pics/docs/etc.... but let's say I install another app, for example, when I install Pale Moon Browser, the moment I launch it the popup still comes telling me I have other apps that can handle bla bla bla

anyone had any luck with this ?

I hate Windows 8 so much! Even with a start menu replacement, this ticks me off, it's crappy Wireless LAN manager sucks, its performance is less when I benchmarks my SSD

I don't know what to do. I can go back to 7, but I am trying to fix a few things if I could just to benefit from the UEFI boot mode as for installing 7, I have to enable legacy ROM which is much slower during boot.

Just go to the Start Screen and type 'notifications'. One of the entries should be 'notifications settings'. Just click on it and you should see a screen with all the settings you need to control notifications.

You can disable them all, turn them off during certain hours or even customize them per individual app.

Sorry to hear you are having so many problems with Windows 8. Personally I have little or no problem with it. It's different, but much better in many ways.

Let me know what exactly what problems you're having and maybe I can help.

Hello Mr. OlgGuyGeek.

I went to notification settings, and they are all turned off, that is how I setup Windows 8.1 initially.

Anyway, my problems:

1- That annoying new app notification I mentioned

2- Lower performance in benchmarks when using AS SSD / Crystal Diskmark as opposed to Windows 8.1 which is very strange, because I heard that Windows 8.1 is more optimized for newer hardware / SSDs in particular, but that doesn't to be the case.

3- After running Winsat, which Windows 8.1 is supposed to then tweak your OS according to your hardware, I have an SSD, but it doesn't disable the Superfetc/Prefetch automatically, so something is either broken there or like someone told me on another forum even though they are enabled, Windows 8.1 doesn't actually write anything to the memory so it isn't really functional. Don't know how true is that

4- The fact that I cannot disable UAC completely via the LUA = 0 registry trick without breaking the OS. The reason I initially disabled it was because it was bugging me when I rename a file in my start menu folder for example, it needs another click to agree as it is a system folder.

When I did disable UAC completely , then rebooted, then tried to rename a folder/file, it then told me that the folder does not exist, what the duck. that's when I learned to never mess with UAC in 8.1

Those are my main concerns. Regarding the interface I have no problem with that since I use StartIsBack and never see metro. But the performance issue is what bugs me most.

Enabled 'Turn off toast notifications' in GPE►User Config►Admin settings►All Settings worked for me.
