I unfortunately must still use dial-up internet.

Being impossible to get my dial-up shortcut from the desktoponto the taskbar of my new Windows 8 laptop, I followed the tutorial to addQuick Launch toolbar to the taskbar, and successfully moved the shortcut tothere.

With Vista, XP etc, one click on Quick Launch toolbarshortcut icon would open this “Connect TPG” window shown below. You then justclicked <Dial> button to connect directly to the ISP.
(Note: TPG is the name of the ISP)

However, with my Windows 8, three mouse operations all overthe screen are required to arrive at this window:
1. You click the Quick Launch shortcut icon and the Charmssidebar opens.
2. Then you have to select the ISP under the Connections header,which causes a <Connect> button to pop up.
3. Which when clicked finally brings you to the above“Connect TPG” window”.

Hardly a quick launch I would suggest !!

Can somebody please advise how to open this window directlyfrom the Quick Launch toolbar or how to pin a shortcut to the taskbar toachieve the same outcome?
NB, pinning “Network Connections” shortcut to taskbar is notthe answer, as you still then required to the go through the same 3 operationsmentioned above.

For further info, the properties window of the dial-up shortcut is shown below.
The target string is: {BA126AD7-2166-11D1-B1D0-00805FC1270E}

Hello Skippy, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Since the shortcut uses the {BA126AD7-2166-11D1-B1D0-00805FC1270E} GUID, you might see if creating a shortcut using either location below may work for you to then add to Quick Launch or Pin to taskbar.

explorer.exe /e,::{BA126AD7-2166-11D1-B1D0-00805FC1270E}

explorer shell:::{BA126AD7-2166-11D1-B1D0-00805FC1270E}

If that doesn't work for you, then you could open Network Connections, right click on the dial-up network connection, and click on Create shortcut. This will place a shortcut of it on your desktop than can then be place in Quick Launch.

Hope this helps, :)

Hello Shawn andthanks for your prompt reply, but no cigar as yet !
I tried bothyour suggestions but to no avail.

String #1opened 'My Documents' folder
String #2 returned thefollowing error message window:

Re your lastpoint, as I mentioned before I already have the dial-up shortcut on the QuickLaunch toolbar.

What I'mlooking for is that the 'Connect TPG' window is activated directly from thisshortcut as was the case with Vista and XP

Instead, as Iexplained, clicking this shortcut now activates the Charms sidebar, and then acouple more mouse operations are required just to get to the 'Connect TPG'window, before being able to dial from this window.

Thanks again,and I hope you or someone can provide a solution.

Minor correction:

Clicking the shortcut (on the Quick Launch bar) activates the 'Networks' fly-out on right hand side of screen, not the Charms sidebar.

I'm afraid that I don't know of another way other than the shortcut of the dial up network connection you already have. :(
