Solved CPU-Z and HWMonitor will freeze Win8 on my machine...

Hi there
I see from the screen shot another INTEL and working.

I really don't know why people were attacking what I thought was a reasonable theory WITH some evidence to back it up.

CPU-Z works on SOME machines but NOT on others -- the one's that work DO *SEEM* to be INTEL (although that doesn't mean it works on ALL Intel machines). Statistics are only a TOOL not 100% concrete proof. But they CAN lead to a solution.

(By the way my pic of it working on my laptop shows it's SANDY BRIDGE as well !!!).

Cheers

Right now, this post is a placeholder until someone finds the upgrade that fixes it for those of us that it does not work yet.
Jimbo,
I did and do realize that CPU-Z works with Win8 CP in almost ALL machines. I never doubted that as it would have been a big splash on the internet ("ANOTHER THING that Win8 won't run" would have been the usual heading!) In fact, I was surprised as hell that ANY OTHER computers were affected besides the 1st run ASUS UEFI BIOS boards.
I suspect the BIOS as the main culprit and how Win8 reads the hardware settings and eventually the issue will be fixed.

So our explanation is that CPUID does not work with Win8 CP. Anyone have criticisms?

A little bit confusing per above. It's all good though. I think CPUID just has to tweak the program to be compatible with your class of hardware, or something like that.

Or maybe there is some setting in either bios, Windows or add-on software common to all that can't run CPU-Z that is throwing a problem.

Thanks GMan. Through the magic of redacting stuff, I changed that particular piece of prose to SOME machines :). Yes, it will be fixed at some point, probably by MS...

Downloads - Open Hardware Monitor
I found a free program that will do pretty much what CPU-Z does without lockups. OpenHardwareMonitor lets me see the current CPU speed and does not lock up the computer. Recommended.
T'hell with Starfleet Orders or CPU-Z.

finally joined after reading posts for a few days. wanted to say thanks for this link it works great. I also had hardware lockups running a EVGA Z68 SLI Micro running their Eleet hardware monitoring program. I suspect it's due to Windows denying low-level hardware access by default. Probably will take an updated version of these programs from the developers.

thanks

Both CPU-Z 1.60.1 and Hardware Monitor 1.19 freeze the system on Windows 8 Release Preview for me.
Using an Asus Maximus V Gene motherboard, Z77 Ivy Bridge chipset.

Huh. I just tried CPU-Z version 1.60.1 (x64) on my ASUS P8Z77 Deluxe with IVY bridge and RP and it worked without any hangups. Make SURE you are using 1.60.1, 1.60 was the version that locked up. If if still fails, go to OpenMonitor until they release a CPU-Z version that works for you. Check your BIOS updates too, they are coming thick and fast for ASUS Z77 boards...

Both CPU-Z 1.60.1.x64 and CPUID Hardware Monitor 1.19 are working fine for me with Windows 8 Release Preview. (ASUS P8P67-M)
But 3DMark06 freezes my system. (3DMark11 and Heaven work fine)
