Solved Clean Install GT 750M, anything special required?

I was wondering, if I do a clean install on my Dell AIO XPS 2720, will I need to install some special software, other than the NVidia Mobile drivers to get the GT 750M card recognized?

The Intel Graphics seems to work fine...

Hey Saltgrass, from what I know about Dell, you'll have to use the drivers from the Dell site including both graphics for Intel and Nvidia. The driver for both may be in one package.

EDIT: Just checked Dell site and is separate drivers for each GPU. They're dated 19 Dec 2014 so that is really good.

Thanks Popeye, the problem is, or was the device was not being seen during boot. So I thought possibly there was something else needing to be done to make it visible.

Loading drivers, or which drivers, was not really the issue since the device was not available in Device Manager to load any drivers on.

Since it appeared the device may have been disabled in the Bios, I checked for any graphics options and there were none. So I decided to load the Bios Defaults, and even clear the CMOS to see if it would help.

Yesterday I did a clean install and the device did not show up. After resetting the Bios, I booted and the device did show up in device manager and drivers could be loaded.

So, for now the system is operational again.. Hopefully it will stay that way.

Well, I thought the bios reset had repaired it and it did last most of the day. The technician arrived to fix the problem and as I was telling him it was working, the GT 750m disappeared again.

Well, since that device is attached to the motherboard, the technician had brought a replacement motherboard. So far, the GPU is back and we will see if it stays for a while.

It is strange, the old board seemed to be working fine until some of the latest Windows updates....maybe just coincidence, but I suppose I will keep that in mind, considering the situation the Windows 10 TPs have with nVidia GPUs...

I always hate these --its fixed -- no it isn't -- yes it is -- no it isn't, type situations.

I have a Dell XPS with AMD graphic card and Intel Onboard video - there is a setting in bios to enable dual monitor..

Which worked fine as dual video setup - until I did a BIOS update.. Now I have no intel on die video

I know everyone has their opinions and different experiences but I avoid Dell. I dislike manufacturers of PCs that make systems that only use their drivers, no generic compatibility especially GPU. I'll buy a Mac if I want that.

Again, just me, not trying to start a huge "which OEM is better" debate.

Kyhi, if you open the control for the AMD video, do you have options to auto select the video or choose one or the other?

My system has no graphics options in the bios. I think the OEM will hide or not make available certain settings. Since I normally use Desktop systems, it is hard for me to adjust to the limited control laptop type bioses give the user.

I can plug in an HDMI cable and get a second monitor and then the normal Windows setup controls that setup.

Popeye, the reason I prefer Dell is their maintenance support. Having the technician come to my house is very convenient, especially for a 27" monitor/computer combination. Shipping charges are a little high on such a thing.

The drivers were never really involved in this situation, but I am currently using the latest Nvidia drivers. Are they any better for this specific system...I do not know.

Whether I use an OEM driver, or one from the specific manufacturer depends on such things as the age of the OS and the system using those drivers. In Windows 10, I will look to the OEM for a while since they have the better understanding of the devices on that system. But as you point out, opinions can vary, and understandably so.

Are you still showing both the Intel and AMD Display adapters in Device Manager?

Nvidia uses something called Optimus software to allow switching between adapters. AMD probably has something similar. On my system, that was included when I downloaded the M version of the video driver... Maybe AMD handles it differently and I have no experience with that.

Saltgrass, I can certainly understand the home support aspect. Acer certainly has nothing like that.

Surprised you can use the latest generic Nvidia drivers. I know at one time that wasn't possible, maybe they've changed. Hope your problem is permanently fixed.
