CHKDSK sticking at 10% - how do I by-pass on restart?

Recently, we had a system crash and I have now rebuilt it from HP's in-built recovery system. I have upgraded to Win 8.1 and have installed all recent Win updates.

As a precaution, I thought I would run CHKDSK /r so set it up to run as Administrator on system reboot. Unfortunately, it sticks/hangs at 10% completed, and a hard restart of the PC just produces the same result.

Is there a way of cancelling this CHKDSK job so that I can have our PC back?

OK. Problem solved, I hope.

A very brief message (<<1 sec duration, and requiring 4 restarts to read it) indicated that one should "press any key" to by-pass the CHKDSK process. I have done this and Win 8.1 is up again.

I'll hold this thread open for a day or two just in case there is any lingering issue.

How long was it stuck at 10%, it usually takes quite a while to run.
Run hard disk diagnostics to see if the disk is OK.

It can take several hours and appear to hang periodically.

1. Chkdsk count down time in Windows 8/8.1 was default to 1 sec which is way way too short for user to hit <ESC> to by pass. You can increase the count down time from this link: AUTOCHK Initiation Countdown Time - Change - Windows 7 Help Forums
2. chkdsk /r will take a long time to complete and there are cases it will seem to stall at one spot for hours, more than 24 hours. You should be patient and let it run to complete.
3. Download: CrystalDiskInfo.V6.3.0 . Unzip and run to make sure your HD is healthy.

Thanks, Niccii, for responding. I had it going for 3 hours before doing my hard reboot. From the comments of some others who replied to this post, perhaps this isn't unusual. (See my comments to the last reply.)

Thanks for your reply, topgundcp. It would appear that perhaps 3 hours at the 10% point isn't all that unusual!

I've downloaded the CrystalDiskInfo6.3 and will try it, and let you know how it goes. (The Japanese characters on the Web site are somewhat off-putting, but I trust your VIP/GURU ranking.) Also, I will try re-running the CHKDSK utility overnight to see if it can progress beyond the 10% point - that should be a good 8 hours.

It would appear that the CHKDSK pause time cannot be set at invocation time (not /T:nn switch), unfortunately, as CHKNTFS can, or am I missing the point and it should be: how can CHKNTFS be used to by-pass CHKDSK?

Well, Nuccii, I didn't know such tools exist on our HP - we live to learn. Thanks for the tip. I'm running the Extensive test now - nearly 4 hours worth!
