Hello,

I am installing the Direct Download version of Windows 8. As it begins to setup it goes to a screen named "What needs your attention". It says "The following things need your attention before you can continue to the installation". It goes on to say "Change the folder or file name of C:\users on drive C:"

It gives me an option called "Open" which takes me to this C:\ drive. However, I cannot change the name of C:\users. Not even with administrative permission. What do I need to do?? Please explain thoroughly because I am not great with this stuff.

Thanks

Give us more info,... what version of windows is on your computer, are you doing a dual boot installation or an upgrade. The folder it mentions is the user {your username} folder, where your documents, pictures, etc. are saved.

I am running Windows 7 right now and I am looking to upgrade. I chose to run the upgrade but this is the error I get.
Not sure how to go about getting past it.

Here is what it is saying, someone please help me figure this out.

Do you need to keep the files or can you do a clean install.

If not you might have to reboot and start again from the upgrade manager if you have gotten that far. It sounds like the folder is in use, so hopefully the reboot might fix that.

I'd also make a boot DVD from the downloaded files for ease of use later, or if you're going to do a clean install.

I'm experiencing the same problem. I've tried restarting the computer and manually changing the name of the Users folder to something like Users.old or OLDUsers.

Upon trying to change the name I receive the error:
Error01.png

If I click the "Try Again" button a few times the error changes to:
Error02.png

Again, this is after a fresh reboot with no programs running on start up. I tried Googling that first error code and didn't come up with anything relevant.

Anyone else experiencing this?

EDIT: I should mention I have a somewhat unique installation. My default users directory is on my E:\ Drive, however my "Default", "Administrator", and "Guest" user folders still reside at C:\Users. I don't think this should have an effect on the current question though.

I'm currently using Windows 7 Pro x64. I'm trying to install the Windows 8 Pro Upgrade.

I'd prefer to keep my files.

Can't you just copy them to a removable media and do a clean install?

anyway, of course you can't rename c/users while you are logged in with a windows account, there are a lot of system files opened (like the NTUSER.DAT hidden files)

also, if you rename that folder (for instance from another partition), windows won't load anymore, because he can't find users information.

if you want to upgrade, you could try to make an iso image and boot from it, instead of installing from the upgrade assistant...

Change the folder or file name install problem Windows 8

My personal solution:

I upgradet 2 PC to W8.

After paying, I got the product-code for the first PC.
By the first PC the installation was succesfull.
I made a copy on a memorystick from the W8 installation files.

Then I payed a second time and got the code for the second PC.
By the second (XP) PC there was the problem with the installation of Windows 8
The screen asked: "Change the folder or file name"
But it is impossible to change

Then I used the memorystick with the files from the first PC and installed W8 by clicking "set-up"
Ofcourse I used the product-code from the second PC.
And it works 100%

In the confermation mail you can also order the Original installation DVD.
And then BOOT from installation DVD.

Good Luck:thumb:
