There should also be a setting for encryption, you want to go with AES rather than TKIP.
Does your connection show as connected in the Windows 8 Network and Sharing Center?

It does not. I can disconnect and reconnect and it tries to identify the network for about 2 minutes then fails; public even changes to private and goes back to public. It shows the router name and allows me to try and create a homegroup and that also fails.
Edit: The "Access Type" is "Internet".
I did use the removal tool.
As I suspected, this problem has nothing to do with networking and lots to do with missing or corrupted files, maybe even the registry is messed up also but who knows. The ipreset won't be able to fix all that.
At this point it may be best to refresh the system. I'm not sure if this system has ever worked correctly or not but reinstalling is another option.

Bizarre problem for sure, it's certainly not normal or repeatable on other systems.
What happens if you connect directly to the modem?
Did you run the IPReset file I posted earlier?

I've done everything you asked. Since refresh saves settings and reloads them, it is possible that there is a bad setting in the registry. Can I do a full install on Win8 which I downloaded? If so, I will format that partition and reinstall from scratch.
Yes it's acting more like the download or the installation had a problem, I would reinstall the Op system if it was me, you can burn the original .iso if you still have it. I'm sure you have your activation number?
It might even help to download the .iso again and burn it using ImgBurn.
A clean install is much preferred over an upgrade installation from Windows 7.

Refresh your PC—Attempts to solve system problems by replacing system files without affecting user files (similar to what a repair install does WRT to system files at least under earlier Win versions). User files still should be backed up. Installed programs will have to be reinstalled except those from the Windows Store. A list of uninstalled programs is provided. Settings will be changed back to defaults.
Don't recall: ?Have you tried:
Automatic Repair—Attempts to make repairs needed to allow Win8 to startup properly.

SCF /SCANNOW
