Can't Add SkyDrive to Favorites?

On my Surface RT, I signed in with a LOCAL account (since I hate having to put in passwords to unlock it), then used my Microsoft account to sign into the Store, Skype, SkyDrive and all the other apps.

However, even after signing into SkyDrive, there is no folder for it in the Favorites library, so I have no way of accessing my files from the Desktop. The SkyDrive "app" itself is useless, I can't even copy the files to my local drive (and I have things like Windows 8 themes, which cannot be opened directly from Metro)

I tried uninstalling the app and re-installing it, somehow it remembered my Microsoft account login and showed my files again, but STILL no shortcut in Explorer! What gives?

Hello drfsupercenter,

You'll be happy to know that SkyDrive is fully integrated in Windows 8.1 when you upgrade to it on October 18th.

If you like for now, you could install the SkyDrive desktop app to have SkyDrive under Favorites in the navigation pane.

Ah, well this is for my tablet so I can't install Windows Live Essentials.

Shame they took the 8.1 preview down, I don't want to wait over a month just to get 8.1 back (I had the 8.1 preview and had to wipe my device due to some problems)
Especially for Surface RT, it added Microsoft Outlook which was really useful, better than the default mail app.

Any idea if that .msu file that triggered the preview installation is still floating around somewhere?

Unfortunately, only the Windows 8.1 Preview ISO file is available. However, you could still upgrade your Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 using the 8.1 ISO file like in OPTION TWO below.

Just be warned though:

If you upgrade from Windows 8/Windows RT to Windows 8.1 Preview/Windows RT 8.1 Preview, you will not lose anything. All your files, settings, and apps will carry over unless as mentioned above you are installing Windows 8.1 Preview in a language that's different from the language currently on your PC.


If upgrading from Windows 8.1 Preview/Windows RT 8.1 Preview to Windows 8.1 final/Windows 8.1 RT final (when released October 18th 2013), you will "Keep personal files only", but will lose your settings and have to reinstall all of your apps.


If upgrading from Windows 8/Windows RT to Windows 8.1 final/Windows RT 8.1 final (when released October 18th 2013), you will not lose anything. All your files, settings, and apps will carry over unless you are installing Windows 8.1 final in a language that's different from the language currently on your PC.

That ISO is only for x86 and x64 though. Surface RT uses ARM, so I'm pretty sure that won't work.

I guess I'll have to just let the tablet collect dust until October then. I just got done reformatting it and installing some apps again, but I hate that stock Windows RT doesn't let you do the "super small" icons.
