Cannot open Folders or Task Manager

Since yesterday, I cannot open any folder on my PC and when I try to open task manager to close explorer, it closes right away.

When I try to open any folder (This PC or Downloads for example) my background flashes black, then the task bar goes blank and then nothing happens. When I try to open the task manager, it opens for 2 seconds and then closes itself down. All my files are still accessible since I am able to still play movies from WMP and I can still search from the Start screen.

Can someone please help me. I do not want to format my PC just to get something like this working again.

OK, I've noticed that what's happening is, explorer.exe pretty much restarts every time I try to open a folder. And that obviously stops the folder I'm trying to open, from opening. I still have no idea what's happening with task manager.

Yes I have. In safe mode I am able to open task manager, but I still cannot open any folders.

In safe mode I get this message when I try to open a folder.

"The instruction at 0x00007FFE0722226E referenced memory at 0x000000000D1DE738. The required data was not placed into memory be cause of an I/O error status of 0xc0000185.

Click on OK to terminate the program."

Uninstall ESET Smart Security using their removal tool and see if any difference. You could always reinstall it.

Failing that select a restore point prior to when the problem happened.

Sorry, I just realized that you edited your post #3 and that changes everything. Other that testing your ram and HD I can no longer help with this problem. Perhaps someone else better qualified on this type of problem in the forum may assist you.
