Running Windows 8.1 pro on a desktop pc. AMD FX 4300 Quad Core Processor, 3.8Ghz,16GB.

I've run into a problem deleting, moving or copying files/folders that have been copied from the C drive to thumbdrives. I get one of two messages depending upon what I'm trying to do. If deleting, the action cannot be completed because the file is open in Windows Explorer. If moving or copying, the action cannot be completed because the file/folder is open in another program.

These files are not open in anything but Windows Explorer.

Not all file types are affected. I think I've isolated the problem to embroidery designs. The designs were created in Husqvarna Viking 6D Embroidery or in Floriani Total Control Professional.

I've tried opening both programs as administrator and saving files. This seems to make no difference.

Suggestions, please?

Take a look in task manager under processes, and see if one of those programs is still running in the background(click cpu column) or maybe still in RAM memory column. if yes right click menu> end process.

Cliff,

Learned a lot about Task Manager after I viewed the details. Didn't see either of the programs. I ended usbmonitor since this seems to be a usb device problem. Nothing made any change to the situation.

Thanks,

Bonnie

One other way is just to shutdown/reboot and this will definitely close whatever is holding the files open. It's happened to me before too in windows 7 and 8.1. Do not under any circumstances just pull the usb out, that can be a pain in butt later as windows will have problems recognizing it.

Cliff,

I didn't understand you correctly and did not remove the usb. Tried it again and it worked.

Thanks,

Bonnie
