For Backup why don't you try a good NAS ?

Too slow.

Slower than Usb ?

Well, I have not studied every NAS for every price. Had a deeper look at this a year ago, and then concluded a NAS was going to be slower. I do not remember the technical issues, so I cannot say if the gigabit connection would slow down anything, but probably it would. In practise, from the benchmarks I have seen, a NAS would most likely be slower than a USB 3 connection, in many cases much slower.

Indeed, the backup setup is in fact what I find most problematic. Perhaps syncing over internet. Perhaps cloning the backup disks in an external unit or in a hot swappable bay and bring the copy elsewhere.

Try dual harddisk nas, for review you may check www.smallnetbuilder.net

they do quite a few reviews in Nas. I think they have separate section on storage solutions.
