Solved BSOD (APC_INDEX_MISMATCH) running Cubase LE AI Elements 7

I uninstalled Avid Pro Tools, restarted the laptop and ran Cubase Elements 7. I recorded some tracks in a new song. Then I saved this. Then I opened a song from the recent songs menu in Cubase. The song opened but the audio did not work. This is usually a predictor of a coming crash. I closed the song and reopened it. Then Cubase Elements 7 crashed with the same message APC_INDEX_MISMATCH. So this is still the same...

I attach the latest minidump.

Please complete Prime95 Blend test and Memtest86+ for at least eight passes. I have advised a senior colleague to take a look at your issue.

I ran the Prime95 Blend test for 13 hours (can't run it for 24 hours now as I have to use this laptop for my work). The laptop passed all tests. I monitored the temperature with SpeedFan. Temp1 GPU and Core fluctuated between 60 and 70C (normal use: between 50 and 60C).

Please upload the Prime95 results.txt logfile (it's located in the directory that you ran Prime95 from).
Have you run Memtest as softwaremaniac requested? If so, were there any errors?

I would suggest removing the AMD OverDrive tool as a test to see if it's causing the BSOD's. If not, it's easily reinstalled.

Please run Driver Verifier again. Now that the Avid Technology Pro Tools has been removed, we hope that another set of Driver Verifier crash dumps will point to a different culprit. FWIW - some BSOD's are straight-forward (a single driver causes them), others are more complicated (the crashes are caused because of conflicts between several drivers). Unfortunately this is one of the more complicated one's.

FWIW, I see lot's more problems when using USB audio than in most other drivers.

Hi Usasma,

Thanks for your help!

Hereby I upload:
Prime95 results.txt
New minidump (Upload tool said it was invalid, then I zipped it and I could upload it.)

I did run the memtest which gave no errors.

I could not find where to remove AMD OverDrive tool. Please explain.

After rerunning Driver Verifier the laptop crashed after re-boot. I started in safe mode with network to be able to send this message. I did make a recovery point first.

Eriik

Drivers look fine now. Prime95 test have all been carried out successfully. Avid Technology Pro Tools has been marked as the culprit, however as multiple software have been reported culprit and this is a consistent issue I suspect this to be a HW issue. RAM maybe.
We shall see what usasma has to say.

Rerun Driver Verifier
Let us see what verifier points to when it doesn't have diginet.sys to blame :0)

AMD OverDrive (AODDriver2.sys) is either a stand-alone application, or a component of the AMD VISION Engine Control Center. This driver is known to cause BSOD's on some Windows systems.
NOTE: these symptoms were from the previous release of OverDrive. The new release uses the same driver name, but is dated from 4 November 2013.
Please un-install all AMD/ATI video stuff from Control Panel...Programs...Un-install a program
Then, download (but DO NOT install) a fresh copy of the ATI drivers from Global Provider of Innovative Graphics, Processors and Media Solutions | AMD (in the upper right corner of the page)
Use this procedure to install the DRIVER ONLY: ATI video cards - DRIVER ONLY installation procedure - Sysnative Forums

If the device (AODDriver or AODDriver4.01) remains a problem, open Device Manager, select the "View" item.
Then select "Show hidden devices" and scroll down to the Non-Plug and Play Drivers section.
Locate the AODDriver entry, right click on it and select "Un-install". Reboot for changes to take affect.
Sometimes the driver remains and continues to cause BSOD's. If this is the case for you, post back and we'll give further instructions for safely removing it.

If overclocking, please stop. Remove the overclock and return the system to stock/standard values while we're troubleshooting. Once the system is stable again, feel free to resume the overclocking.

IMO this is likely a hardware issue also. If that's the case, the systems that the BSOD's are occurring in are the best clue as to what's failing.
If you haven't finished all of these tests, please finisht he one's that you haven't run: Hardware Diagnostics

FYI - I'll be out of town until Monday evening. I'll only be responding with my phone (not bringing a system with me).

Hi Usasma,

Great you're trying to help me solve this!

I had uninstalled AVID Pro Tools, but since you mentioned it again I did a search on the diginet.sys driver, which appeared to be still present in windows/system32, so it seems not to be removed by the Windows uninstall. I removed that file manually. Then I made another restore point and ran Driver Verifier again. This time the laptop rebooted normally. I ran Cubase Elements 7 and played around, doing several things to stress the system like copying all tracks a few times so I had a project with about 24 audio tracks running, and things that previously caused a BSOD like opening another project while a project was running. I opened other programs while Cubase was running, like firefox, agent news/email reader, Photoshop. No crashes so far! So what's the best way to check if we found the cause? What more tests can I do? As far as I know Driver Verifier is still running.

Erik

Use the computer normally for a few days and let us know if you experience any further crashes. Verifier should run for at least 24 h.
I'm glad to hear that we are making progress. :)

Let verifier run for anout 36 hours maximum. If it doesn't cause a BSOD, then it's probably fixed

But, don't forget to turn verifier off - because verifier may cause problems later on ( and it does slow the system down)

Strange phenomena here. I have let Verifier run for over 24 hours. During that period I could do anything with Cubase but it didn't crash. Verifier did slow the system down but I couldn't get it to BSOD.

So I terminated Verifier, re-booted and checked the system. I had checked before that Verifier had really stopped. Taskmanager showed very low values for cpu, memory, hard disk and network.

Then I started Cubase. Within 5 minutes while just opening a project the system BSOD'd with the same APC_INDEX_MISMATCH notice. I attach the minidump.

After that, I restarted Verifier, re-booted and started Cubase. Again I seem to be able to do anything without the system BSOD'ing...

Hi softwaremaniac, thanks for your quick reply.

I use a high end audio interface (Focusrite Scarlet 18i8) that comes with it's own ASIO driver. Exchanging this for a generic ASIO driver would render my Focusrite useless and is therefore no option for me. I already contacted Focusrite support in relation to the BSOD's and they confirmed I use the latest firmware which is known to be solid. Also, how does this explain the strange phenomenon that Cubase crashes when Driver Verifier is off and doesn't crash while Verifier is running?

ASIO explains the crashes occuring only in Cubase. I recommend that you just try that to test if your system crashes.

Hi softwaremaniac,

I must admit when trying the Asio4all driver Cubase hasn't crashed yet. However, this means I cannot use my hi end Focusrite audio interface which renders my whole DAW kind of useless. Is the conclusion that my laptop isn't sufficient hardware to run a DAW with a usb audio interface (regarding your remark on USB audio being the cause of trouble)?

No, there is a bug apparently in the software and it crashes if ASIO is not used. It's rather common issue with the software.

I just ran a couple of tests with the Focusrite ASIO and with the ASIO4ALL and it seems clear that the system crashes consistently when the Focusrite ASIO driver is used and doesn't crash with the ASIO4ALL driver. I will contact Focusrite support again since this is starting to look like a problem with the Focusrite ASIO in combination with my pc hardware. Still puzzles me why it didn't crash while Verifier is running.
