Solved Bored with Metro already and other thoughts

Problem was that I did not expect that to happen. And shortly after I bought the Vaio I went to Europe for 8 months and the Vaio was sitting here in Florida. When I came back to Florida, Sony dragged me around for a couple of months, had me send the thing to their service center only to find that I was right. But then they would not budge until I wrote the letter to their CEO. Then at last I got action within 2 days.

Apple decided that desktop and portable machines are NOT the same, thus should be treated differently! This is the proper way to do it.

Microsoft decided that desktop, mouse-based machines are the same as multi-touch hand-held devices, and the same as game consoles.

Windows Metro is clunky, counterintuitive and ugly. If the UI sticks around, it will improve, just like Windows 95 evolved into Windows 7.

Apple has tried to copyright motions. I hear it's falling apart, as people are realizing that actions cannot be copyrighted. As that becomes more accepted, Windows could get some of them, and that will make it better.

It's a nightmare. Everything takes longer to do, everything is dumbed down. It awkward to use on a normal non-touchscreen laptop.
Perfect for the most clueless user who only uses the PC for mindless tasks. But for serious computer users it's a joke.
I literally spent hours, trying to get the machine to a state where I can use it. I.e. getting start button back, trying to find a way to avoid metro as much as possible. It's insane though.
I'm very, very close to just forgetting about Windows and going Ubuntu.
All that's keeping me are a few appplications that aren't available for Linux.

Glad you got it running.

But yeah...Metro.

You still have Win7 in that case.

And if you still look at Ubuntu, look at it with Wine or Crossover or some VM's installed to see if it can make a difference.

I have a non-touchscreen laptop, and I dont find it hard to navigate...The Start Screen, as I noticed, is basically a giant Start menu. So your precious Start menu is there, only bigger and redesigned.
But I did notice that I spend most of my time in the desktop, which is why I came to that conclusion about the Start screen.

No problem with Metro for me, don't use any Apps but two, the rest used as a menu for desktop stuff. Just tried Android for x86 PC, now that's an ALL Apps OS, in it's entirety and worked with a mouse just fine, Metro apps need touch screen even less. Would be nice to have one though.
If I had a touch screen, with this Android system I would have a 22" cell phone without a phone.

I don't know if I would call it 'bored' with Metro but I don't use the Start Screen much either. It resides somewhere behind the Desktop 'curtain' with a few infrequently used programs pinned to it. It serves it's purpose but I retrieve most of my programs from the Taskbar, right click context menu or WinX.
(It's fun to customize the Start screen as well but that soon falls by the wayside too!)

I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one that sees metro as nothing more than a stupid start menu!

This one-size-fits-all attitude doesn't work! It almost NEVER works!

RIGHT NOW, Tesla is doing it. Their S & X cars use the same battery configuration, which forces the min size of the vehicle. When they want to do a smaller car, they will have to re-design/re-configure.

I cannot think of another situation where OSFA is working...

It's an attempt to substitute brains and skills with electronics. That way the devices are more accessible by more people. Just imagine if automatic transmissions were not available for cars - how many Americans would not have a car.

In a way, part me wants to like the stat screen because I am a very visual person and I like the see things. The giant icons make this easier and love the animated icons even more. I always had huge icons on my desktop as well and I wish I can make them even bigger sometimes. In practice I just don’t feel the need to use a start screen or menu very much. I mainly click on desktop icons. In fact my biggest complaint about Windows 8 is that you cannot make desktop shortcuts for Windows 8 applications.

Everyone is entitled to his or her opinion. but there are so many people that bash windows 8.1 and Vista as bad operating systems but as a person that has been on Vista and now 8.1 I have to say they are not as bad as people say they are overall. Not to offend anyone but I think a lot of people that complain are people who haven't given them a fair chance. I am sure that if something is working well for you then I say stick with it as long as you can.
