Blu-ray Optical to TV/Xbox 360

Is it possible? THAT is the real question.. I've been researching a ton online and can't seem to find anything that I can get that will allow this. I have Windows 8.1 OEM and I can stream any video I want that's already downloaded to my computer using the video app and my xbox 360's use of Play formerly known as AllShare Play or Play To. But the question I have is, how can I stream a blu-ray movie from my computer over a wireless network, either using the internet wi-fi or an external hookup, to my Toshiba LED TV or the XBox 360? Is this a possibility? If so, what hardware and software would you suggest I get to make this happen? My personal computer is in the living room not far from the TV. I could technically run HDMI wires from my GPU to the TV, but I'd rather have it done over some sort of wireless connection so I can push a button and let it do its thing rather than having to go through a major ordeal every time I want to watch a movie.

You would need a Wireless-ac Router to begin with. The computers would also need Wireless-ac adapters or cards in them. Otherwise, use HDMi over Ethernet Wiring with Baluns, that have IR in them.

avsforum.com has a forum dedicated to HTPC, along with threads on the subject with Streaming over HDMI over Ethernet wiring.

(This is for stuff ON the computer you want to stream - there's zillions of ways for Internet streaming - that's another issue).

Try this

What we are going to do is use a smart phone to provide the link between your computer and your X-box /TV. The smartphone already has the components in it - a Wifi card and a decent enough graphics chip for HDMI output (1080p) or at the very least 720p which is still decently viewable.

The trick is to browse the remote computers file system with the file browser on the phone, start playing the movie / video and "Mirror" the screen wirelessly to your TV / XBOX.

so before you start :

Download ES-FILEBROWSER and any movie playing software for your phone -- VLC / MX video player are two free good one's. Android versions from Google play store.

(Apple iPhone users - same idea might be possible - you'll need similar apps from the apple store and an Apple wireless gizmo for screen mirroring).

I'm using a Samsung S4 - but Samsung S3 and tablets work too.

1) Rip the blue Ray to an .iso on HDD with slySoft's AnyDVD SlySoft AnyDVD HD - it de-regionalises and De-drm's it so it's playable from HDD on the computer. (Mods -- hope this isn't against rule 4 -- software is LEGALLY purchasable and user wants to play his video NOT PIRATE IT. !). By ripping to an ISO on HDD you've also got a good archive of your physical DVD too.

2) Mount the ISO -- Windows 8 / 8.1 now has built in DVD mounter. Just douyble click on the ISO in File / Windows explorer.

3) Use Handbrake to convert DVD (the HDD iso one i.e the de drm'ed one) to MP4/AVI/MKV -- your choice -- rip to 1080p HD for blue ray. (Free)

HandBrake: Open Source Video Transcoder

Handbrake will also copy subtitles etc --simply look at the doc.


(For AVI / mp4 / mkv files already on the computer you can skip steps 1,2,3).

5) Set the folders on the computer to SHAREABLE so the remote device can play it.

6) Connect the wireless dongle to an HDMI slot on XBOX / TV.

7) Enable Screen Mirroring on phone -- phone will find Wi-Fi dongle and then connect to it --now you should see your phone's menu on the TV screen.

8) Browse with ES-FILE BROWSER to your folder on the remote computer and simply double click file. (ES-File browser will scan your LAN for remote computers -- just click against the one where you've stored your movie and scroll through directories until you get the movie file you want to stream..

9) double click the file - ES-FILE BROWSER will ask you what do you want to open it with - choose one of your Movie playing apps on the phone.

10) enjoy your Movie now on your TV. !!!! In decent full screen 1080p if your phone and TV video is good enough. 720p BTW is also decently watchable too.

Works a treat -- if you have a Samsung device this is what you need

Samsung WI-FI All-Share Cast Hub, Wireless HDMI Display Adapter (Black)

BTW if you have a Samsung smart TV you might be able to mirror screen to TV directly without the wireless dongle.

Actually I can do all that, but it's an extreme hassle.. I want to be able to pop a Blu-ray disc in, hit play, and have the option to stream to the xbox or TV. The TV is Toshiba and I've streamed regular movies from my phone over the wifi but I want an easier way to do it. Having to wait for it to rip when peeps are waiting to watch the movie is just not that convenient. Now external hardware like some sort of wireless box thing sounds like a good way to go about it. Anyone knows what that is called? And any suggestions on one compatible with Win8.1?

So either I'm going to get a Blu-Ray player for the TV or go tech crazy and spend a bit more and be all fancy with the PC setup.. That and I can burn/rip them onto my PC and store them on drives and have like a "database" of my movies
