Black boxes replacing shortcut arrows on reboot.

So, I find the shortcut arrows ruin all the fancy icons of my games.

I've tried "%windir%\System32\shell32.dll,-50" in the registry, following the steps here: Shortcut Arrow - Change, Remove, or Restore - Windows 7 Help Forums

Obviously this is not working for Windows 8.1 because after a reboot or relog, then they turn into: bandicam 2016-08-07 04-01-04-242.jpg

What is happening is they become large, black boxes, about the same size as the vista style shortcut arrows.

Is there anyway I can remove shortcut arrows on icons for Windows 8.1 without those boxes showing up/

Let's put the shortcut arrows back for now, maybe we can find a better way to eliminate the arrows without getting ugly markings in return. Tweaking.com's Windows Repair (All in One) has a click box to re-pair icons and/or their shortcut arrows to their respective places. Hover, Inc.'s RegSeeker has a click box that purports to eliminate shortcut arrows -- however, I have never tried it.

Well, I can fix it by just removing the registry value "29" but whenever I put it back it makes black boxes.

Tweaking.com's Windows Repair (All in One) item number 12 - repair icons; what happened after you tried this? Now, it doesn't mention shortcut arrows directly, I'm hoping that repairing the icons will bring back the shortcut arrows, back to Windows' beginning. Then, a utility needs to be found that will do what you want without leaving black boxes on each icon.
IMO, I recommend against removing shortcut arrows; when one is in the midst of making changes, deleting this, copying that, moving the other, one can easily delete or copy or move a program [EXE] instead of just its associated shortcut/icon.

I ran the program, and it fixed it at first. After doing a restart, something the program needed, the black boxes came back.

I've noticed that when they aren't there, doing any sort of restart or relog brings them back.
