You may want to avail the Media Center pack that is currently being offered for free for Windows Pro users. It's

I registered it and I was told that the product key would be mailed to my account within 24 hours.

what happens to the key of the OS you upgraded from, i have windows 7 ultimate retail would the key from my original OS no longer work if i decided i dont want win8 ?. you also say that the installer offers to do various types of install, how would it keep my old apps if i choose to keep them., surely a format will wipe the drive and start clean

Yu cannot use the license for the qualifying OS in another system while Windows 8 Upgrade is installed - but if you uninstall/reformat the upgrade, then you can reinstall the qualifying OS with its original Key - and use the upgrade elswhere.

As NoelDP said, you can't use the Win7 key unless you remove the Win8 upgrade.

You can choose an Upgrade install if you want to keep the programs, some may not be carried over but, usually they all are, depending on the programs.
Upgrade Install from Windows 7 or Vista to Windows 8

Sometimes an Upgrade install will carry over problems from the previous OS, I always do a Clean install, if you have any issues you should consider a Clean Install.
