Audio over hdmi until i plug in earphones an unplug them.

I have a computer i built first one in a long time and its been about 5 years since i have windows. I have the issue that if i boot up it will play audio over hdmi to my tv i have hooked up fine but when i plug in headphone to front jack they work fine. when i unplug my headphones it wont play over hdmi it says there is no devices attached. but i rebot with hdmi plugged in and its fine .

What Video do you have? You show "Intel" but there are no Intel video cards. There is Intel video built into some CPU's, which I assume is what you have.

What sound driver do you have for the PC? It looks like the built in audio on that motherboard is VIA. If you do not have the correct VIA driver (e.g. only the generic basic function Windows installed HD Audio Codec), get the driver from MSI. As MSI does not list Windows 8 drivers, the Win 7 will work for Windows 8, but may not work correctly for Windows 8.1. This may or may not correct the problem, but its important to have the correct sound driver, with the jack detection.

The HDMI, if an HDMI cable is attached normally automatically switches to the HDMI audio output and sets itself as the default audio playback device. Plugging in a headphone, if it changes the audio playback to the headphones instead of HDMI, should automatically change back to HDMI. But, if it does not, manually setting the HDMI as the Default Playback device, in the Sound Panel, should take care of it, rather than having to reboot.

I used the drivers that came on the dvd with the motherboard and updated them . When I first installed windows i had a hard time getting it to go theough hdmi and had to reinstall drivers. I know on the linux side it works fine . Yes i have the Intel 4600 graphics .What is VIA?

VIA is the audio chip on the motherboard. You need the VIA HD Audio drivers for the PC sound. However, there have been some isolated audio issues and audio driver issues in Windows 8.1. Some audio devices require Windows 8.1 specific drivers to function or function correctly. I've seen a couple of problems posted on here about that. I have a (home) recording studio and ran into that problem with recording interface unit (a Roland Octa-Capture). Roland had to issue Windows 8.1 drivers for it to function.

It sounds like a driver issue to me. I suggest you download the latest Intel graphics drivers direct from Intel's website.
