Yes! I had the same issue for a Lenovo t60 with ATI X1400 and a WSXGA+ Screen, W8 always saying the installed basic driver was fine.
... finally solved in analogy to csae's solution!
This is the correct driver for an ATI X1400 on Lenovo:
Video driver (ATI Mobility Radeon, FireGL PCI Express-2) for Windows Vista (32-bit, 64-bit) - ThinkPad R60, T60, T60p, Z61m, Z61p ("Video driver (ATI Mobility Radeon, FireGL PCI Express-2) for Windows Vista (32-bit, 64-bit) - ThinkPad R60, T60, T60p, Z61m, Z61").
-> so I think it would be a good idea to a) use a computer manufacturer's driver, not ATI's legacy versions and b) the VISTA version (at least in my case, as notebook was delivered with vista)
I uninstalled all ATI stuff I had installed in the meantime.
And yes, as trubul says, mobility modder's no good. Uninstalled that as well. Still have to get rid of .net.
- Installed the above mentioned driver
- Picked it from C:\DRIVERS\WIN\VIDEO\Packages\Drivers\Display\LH_INF
- It worked
