Or maybe the inability to boot the flash drive is due to the Setup changes reverting back to default.

I would agree ,usual cause of this was/is a dead bios battery

Yes, the boot menu access is with the Esc key on this computer. It only shows the Windows Boot Manager. When I try to modify that, it resets itself to default.

On my ASUS K75DE Laptop hitting the Esc key brings up the one time quick boot menu. If I hit that I can select my thumb drive as a boot option for that one boot up. On the next boot up it reverts back to the BIOS default, my hard drive. On some PC's the thumb drive has to be formatted in the Fat file system to install in UEFI mode. My laptop is fine with NTFS though. You should get two boot entries for your thumb drive, one with UEFI in the description and one without, assuming it was created correctly. http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/15458-uefi-bootable-usb-flash-drive-create-windows.html?filter, http://www.eightforums.com/tutorial...e-firmware-interface-install-windows-8-a.html
It was F9 for the factory reset options on my laptop too. What I got was the advanced options to do a reset. http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/2302-reset-windows-8-a.html I've since done a clean install so it does nothing now.
The hard drive can be shown in the BIOS and even pass the SMART tests but still fail to load the OS. If the file system gets corrupted the OS won't load. Physically the drive is fine, but the data on it is mangled.

Just curious, but nowhere in this thread did I see mention of which model this was. I know it's an Asus, but that's it.

BTW here's something odd my Asus Zenbook Prime (UX31A-DH71) ultra book does. Sometimes when the battery is low (not dead), it won't boot unless I plug in the power cord. You'll see the keyboard light up, and the backlight of the screen, but that's it. When I plug in the power cord all is good. I've no idea why it does this sometimes

I'm sure after all this time you've plugged it in, but...

It's an Asus G46V.

Your symptoms are exactly what this is doing. It is plugged in, but I'll put a voltmeter on the cord to confirm it has correct voltage.

Have you tried calling Asus to see if they have any ideas seeing that the notebook is only 6 months old?

And I saw your post about you testing my theory out. It was a shot in the dark. Anyway see if Asus can figure it out.

That is just a quick boot menu, that only changes the boot order for that one boot up. After that it automatically goes back to the BIOS default. On my ASUS laptop the last option on that menu is "Enter Setup". If I select that I enter the full BIOS menu and any changes made there will stay. Pressing F2 during power on will get me the same full BIOS menus. I do believe If your USB thumb drive is not bootable it won't show up in the boot options list.

If you aren't getting any boot error messages, it probably is not the boot device. If you can see anything, the logo (which you might try changing the settings in the bios) should show up as well as messages about the keys to use. The behavior may be different depending on whether you cold boot or restart.

Most Asus systems are F2 or Del for the bios. If F8 works, you may have to hit it at the exact right time.

I have seen many threads about black screens after an update. But they usually happen after the Windows logo.

What type of system and what type of video does it have, AMD/Nividia or Intel?

As far as recovery drives needing to be made on a UEFI machine, not really sure. But if it was UEFI bootable it should show up if media is loaded prior to boot.

Edit: The unit does have an HDMI output. I know you think since the Setup Utility shows, the video is OK. But I had a Dell laptop once where the display on the LCD was terrible but looked normal on an external monitor... If you are loosing the picture when the resolution changes, an external monitor or TV might help.

I make just about all my install thumb drives on my desktop PC. It does not have a UEFI BIOS. I have had no problem making a UEFI install thumb drive for my Laptop on that PC. It's all in how you make the thumb drive not whether the PC its made on is UEFI or not. On my ASUS desktop PC's its F8 for the quick boot options menu. Not a good choice as far as I am concerned. When I want the quick boot menu I often end up in the Windows Safe mode menu, and when I want safe mode I get the BIOS quick boot menu. It's just so timing critical its a pain. I think its Del for BIOS access on those PC's too. On my ASUS laptop its Esc for the quick boot and F2 for full BIOS.

I feel stupid. Thought he was in BIOS options all along, not the quick boot menu. Really wondering if this some other hardware issue rather than the boot sector or hard drive. Laptops suck in that you can't swap parts like desktops.

I only knew where he was because I have an ASUS laptop. The BIOS is also a lot more locked down/restricted compared to a desktop PC too. Likely so you can't much things up to where you have to do a BIOS reset to get it to post. My ASUS laptop isn't so fussy as to how the thumb drive is formatted etc. My wife's Acer on the other hand was a pain. I had several goes at that before my thumb drive was visible as a boot option. It's BIOS options we confusing compared to my ASUS.

Yes, the boot menu access is with the Esc key on this computer. It only shows the Windows Boot Manager. When I try to modify that, it resets itself to default.

I have been mostly working in the full BIOS, which is accessed via F2. (Although I hesitate to say BIOS when it is UEFI, I believe it is correctly called Setup). When I said above that I tried to modify what is listed in the Quick Boot menu, I meant that I had tried to do that in Setup (BIOS) , which is where you make changes to what will appear in the Quick Boot menu (at least it appears that way since it says Add Boot Device as an option in the Boot tab of the BIOS/Setup).

How about if you pull the battery and plug in power? Really good to eliminate this stuff.

This laptop is rather odd, you cannot remove the battery (or the hard drive) unless you disassemble the laptop by removing the entire bottom, which is held in place by torx-head fasteners. I decided long ago not to disassemble laptops if I do not own them, too many surprises.
