If you do not set a task for a scan doesn't defender scan the whole computer when it is idle?.

After a initial full scan is it really necessary to scan the whole computer weekly as it defender scans every file you open as you use them?

It is not necessary to do a full scan unless it finds a virus, and it does not do a scan from what I have seen unless you set one, at least I have never seen it do one by itself when idle because I set it immediately for a scheduled scan but I could be wrong on this point
