Is it just me and my imagination or does windows 8 seem to have more BSOD's then windows 7 ever had. Surely I can't be the only one to see this or is it just an optical illusion on my part.

I've not had one in either of windows 7 or windows 8. I just seem to see more BSOD's on the windows 8 forums across the board then I noticed across the board on the windows 7 forums.
I haven't had one since the dreaded Vista, but that was due to Acer with 1GB of memory. None with 3 years of 7. None with 8 so far. Knock on wood!
I was having problems opening Windows Mail yesterday. Checked other apps and nothing wrong with them. Mail bogged the machine to a crawl. Running scannow didn't come up with anything wrong. Ran the app fix from the tutorials. It stated my video driver may be outdated, but checked that to be current. Eventually something worked itself out. All's well within a few hours. Never did figure out what was wrong.
