8 & 8.1 very very slow

Hi, I am one of many experiencing very slow speeds on booting, opening programs (word) etc. Boot time can take 15 minutes.

I have a standard Lenovo z580 (i5, 6gb ram, partitioned gpd 1tb hdd). No odd programs just standard AVast, office 2007, internet via ie11, all updates upto date

What we have tried:

chkdsk (clean), restore (no diff), sfc (no errors), organise, disable all startup progs, uninstall/re-install (java, avast), upgrade to 8.1, MS updates, check device manager, and ensured we had the latest drivers (inc graphics). All that did improve things, but as soon as I opened Word (2007) it reverted to what my wife calls "on strike". let me say that the system doesn't fail, just very slow.

Clearly this together with other reports of very slow win 8 - there is a Win 8 issue - any fix for this? Is there a problem with gpd disks which are new to me?

PS also ran combofix/malwarebytes looking for malware, but system 100% clean.

Avast might be slowing your PC. Because many people reporting that Avast is making their PCs slow.

I agree but not 15 minutes to boot!!!

Also I did uninstall and re-install Avast - the difference as negligible, and is certainly not the cause.

Further test, I ran the long version of Seatools, confirms the drive has no probs.

Any other ideas before I do a clean re-install?

Try disable some startup programs. Or see the events viewer to see if there something that is hogging your PC

As I inititially said all start up items had been removed.

Since I last posted, I have done an in-place rebuild. However the problem continued.

I have found, notwithstanding Seatools said all was well, that if I remove the hibernation and pagefile files and then replace with new, the system works fine for a while.

I also noticed that after the rebuild that the winmgmt service was corrupted, so reset that. Until I reset I was not going to see any events.

Now so far the system (events) was clean.

Subsequently when I tried to dump the recovery partition to disk it froze. There were some system events after that (time outs), but I believe these were the result of the freeze, not happened since. However the system has now reverted back to being excruciatingly slow. Seems to me the system whereby win8 uses the hibernation file to do a quick start is prone to problems if it stores a corruption on shut down?

In my mind there is now no other option but to do a full rebuild from scratch.

This experience has told me one thing - MS have made fixing probs on win8 extra-ordinary difficult - just getting into safe mode is now so complex!!!

In the event there are corrupt system files, in the elevated command prompt run sfc /scannow , it will take a while. There should be no corrupt system files.

Sorry missed that, did the problem start when you went from 8 to 8.1? You may also wish to check your RAM with Memtest86+

No, I went to 8.1 to try and fix problem, but the problem was the same on both 8 & 8.1.

Yes I did do a couple of passes with Memtest - clean.

I can temporarily fix, but just reverts, not clear what can trigger the problem.

I am now attempting a clean install, having reformatted the OS GPD partition
