Windows Defender Error

To be safe, do a full scan of your system at boot with Windows Defender Offline to help make sure that your system is clean.

If it comes back clean, then you might see if doing a system restore using a restore point dated before this happened may be able to undo and fix it for you.

I've had this issue a couple of times Defender error 0x800705 after resuming from sleep

It appears to me that it is still running (well the service is) and after reboot all looks OK. If so it seems the bug is in Action Centre rather than defender and so less alarming.

It only happed twice to me and I can't recreate the situations when it does but reboot fixed it both times for me.

Can't seem to turn WD off, even from account with admin privileges. I tried doing this from services.msc. Can't change anything.

    Leeelson,

I though that you wanted to turn on Windows Defender?

OK. Can't restart WD or change any of the settings (manual, automatic, etc). many troubleshooting guides suggest doing this (restarting).

If you mean refreshing Windows 8, then be sure to back up anything that you do not want to lose first to be safe. After a refresh, you would need to reinstall all desktop programs.

Not quite willing to go that far....yet. After all, this is just real time protection. I can always install a 3rd party program *that works*.

I was talking about trying to restart the Windows Defender Service, accessible by running services.msc. Since I can't touch this service (permissions problem?) it may be an indication of something more fundamental being screwed up.

It sounds like your system may be infected. Were you able to do a full scan of your system at boot with Windows Defender Offline to see what it reports?

You may need to create it on another computer to boot from on your computer if you are unable to create it on your computer.

    Done. No infection, no change.

Try running a scan with the following scanners. They are on-demand scanners. If possible, d/l these on a clean machine to minimize the possibility of corruption.

If you made your copy of WDO on the infected machine, it's a possibility the anti-virus definitions were compromised.

    First, run rkill

Do NOT reboot after running it. Then run the following scanners.

Malwarebytes (The free version is good, you can upgrade later if you choose) Do a full system scan. If it finds anything, check the boxes of the items found & quarantine them.

TDSSKiller. This will scan for rootkits.

    Norton Power Eraser.

Because Norton Power Eraser uses aggressive methods to detect threats, there is a risk that it can select some legitimate programs for removal. If you accidently remove a legitimate program, you can run Norton Power Eraser to review past repair sessions and undo them.
Please post the results of these scans
