    Hi McAfee came with my new Windows 8 computer so I started up the trial. If I delete it will Windows defender start up automatically ?

    Anyone know where I can read what Windows defender does as I would still wish to have it do what most paid for programs do mailware etc.

    If you don't have any installed, windows will prompt you to enable windows defender.

    Windows Defender is good at its job. it stays out of the way, you don't even know its there unless there's a problem. It does both anti-virus and anti-malware. It doesn't scan your email, and it doesn't scan web pages, but it does catch things as they are trying to install themselves.

    If you want all the bells and whistles you can upgrade, but Windows Defender does a good job without being too intrusive.

    It is. He was joking that you had to buy the OS to get it.

    Just would like to put my 2 cents. I am working in tech support and the escalation boys have been saying good things about windows 8 defender. Long story short they have been trying to infect it with not much success. And I trust their knowledge sooo I'm taking their word for it. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles but I've seen plenty of FBI virus, and ZAccess go through avg, avast, norton, etc at work.

    Hello ;

    IMO Kaspersky is the best paid antivirus .

    Kapersky has the highest and best detection rate amongst antivirus software. it also has exceptionally good customer support, so if anything goes wrong they are very good at dealing with your problems.

    I just speak from experience of using it .

    For me i'd recommend Eset Anti Virus/Eset Smart Security Works fine with me... in idle it consumes less resources than others as per my experience also .., if scanning i can't feel impact to my system(depends on your system specs) and i won't recommend norton for it'll just corrupt your windows (sometimes, in my experience of it, and its a bloatware )
