Old Paint Shop Pro no longer works on Windows 8.1

I have installed and re-installed Paint Shop Pro 7 on this system several times (having had to re-instal and/or repair the OS).

After the lastest repair, Paint Shop Pro doesn' work. The system telling me that "This app sic can't run on your PC".

I assume that an update to Windows has caused this - or not?

Whatever, how can I get it to run on this system again? Surely if it worked before it should be possible for it to work again?

    Hello Syncopator,

You might see if you may be able to use compatibility mode on the program to get it to run properly.

    Thank you Brink.

I have tried the Troubleshoot Compatibility route. The program opens when I click its icon, and I can open a jpg file via the program's File menu, but Clicking directly on a jpg file brings up the message I reported.

I haven't yet examined all the information in that link - something which I will do after posting this.

If you haven't already, you might see if you may be able to use an option from the tutorials below to set the program to be the default program to always open those file typed with.

Open with - Change Default Program in Windows 8

    Brink,

Options one and two didn't solve the problem. I don't much like the idea of messing about with the registry. so I have, at least for now, skipped option three.

I tried uninstalling and re-installing the program. Instead of using autorun I opened the disc, right clicked on the exe file, and selected Run as Administrator. No difference I'm afraid.

I have tried the suggestions in both the links in your post #4 without success.

It baffles me that I have installed the program several times before without a problem.

Did you try installing it using compatibility mode on the setup file to see if that may work?

It'll be the same as OPTION TWO, but just on the program's installation file.

I clicked on the exe file's Properties, then checked Run ... in compatibility mode for XP Service Pack 3, and Run ..., as an administrator, then Apply and OK.

I did that. The application opens from its icon.

When clicking on a jpg file the first thing which happens is a message saying "There was a problem while sending the command to the program", and the program then opens - but it doesn't display the file.

Then, on closing the program I get another message, the header of which is DDE Server Window: psp.exe - Application error and its window says The instruction at 0x61a9b69c referenced memory 0x00000011. The memory could not be read.
Click on OK to terminate the program.
