Solved Fresh Windows setup keeps showing "Checking for updates"

Hi, I was facing some issues of stability in my Windows installation few days back, so I had done Reset PC from Recovery Manager yesterday to install a fresh copy of my Windows 8.1 64-bit OEM OS version. While it installed the same properly, without any errors, I am unable to get Important &/...

I referred to some posts on this issue on this forum and elsewhere but can't get a fix on this, as I don't have any...

Answer: Why it can take Disk Cleanup so long

Thanks, but that make isn't available here. I only got options in Samsung, Kingston, Sandisk and Transcend. Also, 250Gb seems out of stock for most of these makes. 120Gb won't suffice for my reqts, while I can't afford a 512Gb one :-( Guess, I will have to settle for a standard HDD this time...

Answer: Why it can take Disk Cleanup so long

Oh. Can you suggest a few good ones ? I have checked Amazon.in and similar online buying options but all makes, like Samsung, Kingston, Sandisk, and Transcend seem about same price for 250Gb SSDs. Samsung is expensive though.

Answer: Why it can take Disk Cleanup so long

Seems SSD prices have fallen is varying degrees in different geographies. Here in India, it still costs twice as much as a HDD of same capacity. I would like to buy a 250Gb SSD to be able to use it for another 4-5 years atleast (though I replace my laptop every 3 years). Here Samsung 850 EVO...

Answer: Why it can take Disk Cleanup so long

@CounterMike - Yes, I agree with you that SSDs can be much faster than HDDs. If SSDs last twice as long as HDDs then they may justify their cost, which is double that of HDDs currently. While SSDs' performance is appreciated by everyone who's used it, cost is its biggest drawback ;-(

Answer: Why it can take Disk Cleanup so long

Thanks @CountMike. Sure, SSD seems a lot faster than an HDD. Also, is SSD suitable for all-day computing (I use my laptop for over 10 hours daily) and also to store data ? I have often read that SSDs are installed by folks for faster boot-up and such. If and when I plan to buy an SSD, probably...

Answer: Why it can take Disk Cleanup so long

Thanks Cliff. Sure, am saving up for an SSD, which I understand is "much faster" than a regular HDD, though it would help if someone can share a comparison chart of the same :-)

Answer: Why it can take Disk Cleanup so long

Thanks @Cliff. I have got the RAM upgraded from 4Gb to 8Gb by adding a Corsair 4Gb one of same specs. Has improved speed of opening apps, but not noticeable in booting or shutdown. Of course the Task Manager used to show RAM usage of over 90% when all three web browsers were open - IE. FF, and...

Answer: Why it can take Disk Cleanup so long

Hi Cliff, your clarifications on prolonged Disk Cleanup task is convincing. However, I am not sure if it should take over 4 hours that it for my system today. Moreover, I am going to replace my HDD on my HP 15-r063tu Notebook soon, as the HGST 500Gb HDD inside is failing (Short DST fails, and...

Solved Will SSD boost my laptop perf lot more than regular HDD ?

I agree @Itaregid. When I had a desktop PC at home, it was so much easier to just upgrade the RAM, HDD, or replace the keyboard &/ mouse all by myself. Now, with this damned laptop, I need to run to a service center to get even the keyboard replaced, forget upgrading the RAM / HDD myself (though...

Solved Will SSD boost my laptop perf lot more than regular HDD ?

Okay, so batteries are the culprits ! So, it's the "form factors" which enable even small PC vendors easily assemble PCs customized to buyers' requirements, and also cheaper than branded ones with same specs. Too bad such a thing didn't happen for laptops. Would have been great for consumers ...

Solved Will SSD boost my laptop perf lot more than regular HDD ?

Fine, we'll skip the battery issue for now. But, computing or phone usage has changed radically in recent times, with people doing many tasks on their smartphones, that they did earlier only on their PCs / laptops. Hence, the need for all such devices to support all-day usage. That's my view...

Solved Will SSD boost my laptop perf lot more than regular HDD ?

Well, battery tech hasn't kept pace with laptop or smartphone tech at all. We need batteries which pack enough power to last atleast a day, esp. for laptops. Yes, you are right on the RAM restrictions in motherboard / BIOS. My laptop model can use only upto 8Gb, and has two RAM slots, which...

Solved Will SSD boost my laptop perf lot more than regular HDD ?

True. Seems like the age old advise on mobile phone battery recharge. While NiMh / NiCd batteries had "memories" and required to be drained out fully before charging them again, the newer Li-ion or Li-Pol batteries have no such constraints. Yet, the same old advise is passed on for ages. I'd...

Solved Will SSD boost my laptop perf lot more than regular HDD ?

I agree with your view. Just recollect that in my earlier Acer Aspire 5742G laptop, which came with just 3Gb RAM (1+2Gb), I had upgraded it with a 4Gb module of Transcend make, while retaining the 2Gb Samsung one. It worked fine for couple of years, until I sold the laptop off. This time I got a...

Solved Will SSD boost my laptop perf lot more than regular HDD ?

Thanks for sharing the comparisons for Samsung 850 EVO SSD and the 750 one. Sure, the 850 one does perform way better, and also offers 5-yr warranty, while 750 one comes with only 3-yr war'ty. But, the prices in INR are incorrect, as I am not getting those prices in any e-com site here in India...

Solved Will SSD boost my laptop perf lot more than regular HDD ?

Fully agree with you Itaregid. While I understand that all electronic devices do fail at some point, it's just human to avoid a brand which has failed sooner than expected (I assume HDDs last atleast 4-5 years, but then...). Moreover, in my case, neither of the three - HGST, WD, or Seagate have...
