The 4K read is a bit shy. Did you have anything running during the Atto test ?

Mine. Sorry couldn't resist. I hope HDD's are a thing of the past very soon. Mechanical = Bad

I agree on the HDD part. But sticks are not the solution. They are far too slow. I use SSDs - more than half a dozen. Even as external drives to run my virtual machines. And that is fast. See my 8.1 boot time from an external.

I had a web browser (Seamonkey) open plus all the normal stuff that runs all the time. Should I do a Clean Boot then run the ATTO test?

That may be a good idea - at least for comparison.

    @Ztruker
ATTO benchmark is not very reliable it can generate absurd results based on "best scenario". Personally I wish ATTO results that I have got would be true..
Anyway, get either Crystal Disk Mark, or ASSSD Benchmark (requires .NET 3.5 though) godd are also PC Mark 7, IOmeter, HD Tune PRO.
    Notes:
ASSSD Benchmark is geared toward servers so don't worry about final score.

    usefulness:
1000kb sequential r/w- important for video editing movies, software installation
4k random r/w- multitasking, word, excel

remember to run benchmarks on "clean" system, just after reboot (so you need to reboot of each test)

    Samsung Evo 840 250GB v WD 250 Sata1.5 on sata 3 ports

Because of a few problems I upgraded W7 to W8 then W8.1 on an old WD250 250 gb drive.
Once I had it all working to my satisfaction i.e boot to desktop, classic shell menus, gadgets, elevated prompts to start up my W7 gadgets and other progs on startup ,W7 games etc installed. I was in a position to transfer to a 250GB ssd drive. Having read reviews, I settled on a Samsung evo 840 250GB for 120.
I decided to make a couple of tests on my way through this to see the effect.
EVO 840 installed and WD digital 250 sata transferred. SSD bios upgraded to latest. Samsung magician run drive optimised and rapid disk enabled . The results using CrystalDiskMark before and after are:

Quite a difference, but real mode counts more than a couple of bencmarks so here is a couple of real figures:

Windows 8.1 load from blue W8 icon to first Desktop WD sata 54 secs: Evo 840 8 secs
Skyrim (game ) WD sata sata 62secs Evo 840 26 secs, and saves and cell changes appear to be instant.

Best upgrade ever. I have ckecked my profile but specs for this machine is :-
    Gigabyte ga-890gpa-ud3h (6 sata 3 ports), amd 1090T (6core) at 3.4 ghz
Corsair dominator 8 GB at 1600
Nvidia gtx460, 2TB wd sata 250GB (buk data backups etc. samsung evo 840 for op system and games

Really posted to show users the advantage of swapping to an ssd even use a 120gb drive for your op and
and putting large files on a standard sata drive to save costs.

That's impressive. Definitely the best bang for the buck is a SSD.

Due to boot problems on a PCIe expansioncard I had to insert this SSD into a SATA-2 sled.
    Upgraded my OS X as wel with a RAID0 with 2x Samsung 840 EV0 500GB on the PCIe Velocity Solo X2 (SATA-3).
    BEST upgrade I ever made....

    Cheers
