    Windows upgrade to 8.1 failed

So when the windows 8.1 upgrade came out I updated to it without any problems but a few weeks ago a driver update showed up in windows update thingy. I decided to update it but it went horribly wrong my screen went black and stayed black for a hour, that's when I decided to restart my computer after the logo I just got a black screen with a flashing mouse. I made a recovery stick with my sisters windows 8.1 laptop and renewed my windows to 8. I wanted to upgrade to windows 8.1 again but it didn't work after it rebooted it just went to windows 8 again and gave me an error message that said that it couldn't update to windows 8.1. I searched on Google for a few hour and what I got was that I need to update my video drivers. I tried the default drivers I got (v8.9) it didn't work I tried the newest beta one (v13.11) didn't work either. And because my laptop manufacturer is Toshiba i cant update to the latest release of catalyst control center so i have to use the old version of Toshiba or the beta version. Both didn't work BUT before the driver incident I successfully updated to windows 8.1 with v13.11 beta however now it doesn't want to work anymore. Any suggestions?

P.S. You can see my system specs in the system specs thingy on the left side under my name.

    Hello Inenting,

welcome to the forum. You can update to Windows 8.1 via the "Store" app. There are specific instructions from Microsoft as to which updates you need to install before you can update to 8.1. From my experience I can assure you, it is better to install all available updates. When you have patched Windows 8.0 to the latest version, you should be able to install Windows 8.1 using the Store.

If it still doesn't work please give us the error message.

I installed all the updates I could from important updates to optional ones but when I try to install the following happens:

    1. It goes through the installation process in the windows store
    2. The computer reboots
    3. It says its doing something
    4. It says its restoring back to the previous windows

And when I log in it gives me this error:

    "Couldn't update to Windows 8.1

Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.

    0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

Looks like you are not alone

    Have you tried
    • detaching all peripheral devices (except monitor, keyboard and mouse perhaps although if the mouse is "fancy", the mouse driver could be the problem (SteelSeries - Gaming Mice) not sure about your Rapoo 7100P)
    • Update the drivers for all devices that are still left (graphic card and make sure they are explicitly Windows 8.1 compatible
    • perform a clean boot as described here How to perform a clean boot in Windows

Now try again. Please report back how it went.

    My findings
    [RESOLVED] Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017

    Well :-(

As a last resort what Microsoft tells to do is to

    1) disconnect from the internet
    2) install a clean 8.0
    3) disable download of drivers from Windows update
    3) reconnect to the internet
    4) Install Windows Updates (without drivers)
    5) Install 8.1

I did this but it did not work it still gives me the same error now I have a new question:

If I did a clean windows 8.1 install with a ISO would it automatically activate because my OEM key is injected into my bios?

EDIT: In the windows store it says: after the download you have to accept the license conditions (It's in dutch and I forgot what it was in english) otherwise it reverts back to the previous windows BUT I do not get anything to accept after it downloads. It just starts installing it and fails. Could this be a bug?

That didn't work for me. I had a laptop with Windows 8.0 pre-installed but I replaced the HDD with a SSD so I had an empty hard disk and the 8.0 key in the BIOS

I installed 8.1 and it asked for a key and didn't activate. I called Microsoft and they asked for a key. I told them it was in the BIOS and I didn't know the key and they said that I needed to contact the laptop manufacturer.

I installed 8.0 and it recognised the key in the BIOS, didn't ask for a key and was activated. Then I installed the updates and eventually Windows 8.1 from the Store.

You have a Toshiba computer. Have you seen these instructions?
