Hi Liz81
I know the frustration of which you speak, I have an A6-6310 in my Lenovo laptop and it too has been plagued with this AMD display driver bug. I've also had periodic BSODs, or a frozen display that may recover on its own after 2 or 3 minutes. I've also had what I can best describe is a video display test pattern go to town on my screen, just a bunch of flashing colors, left, right, top bottom - I have to restart or shutdown to recover. I finally disabled the creation of a memory dump file, simply let me know in event viewer. The event was always Display Driver and the message, "quit responding and has recovered" - this has been going on since 2015. I should have returned the laptop pronto!
I've tried a few things myself, to no avail -- updating to what is the latest driver for my system from AMD (I believe it is the one you pointed to), no dice, eventually experienced one of the mentioned issues. I also recently installed Win8.1x64 fresh and I had hoped by simply installing the AMD driver only, no control panel tools, just the plain ole driver - nope. In fact just a few days ago I was going to post here and guess what...?
The AMD forums have plenty of conversation about this issue and their lack of a fix for some certain generation of APUs, I don't believe it was ever fixed for ours. In my case Lenovo as well never pressured AMD for a fix nor fixed the issue either, so no help there. If I was you I would let HP know you're very displeased their lack of pressure on AMD as well their own ignoring the issue and their customers. When they tell you to upgrade or spend more money on something new I always retort "
How do I know you wont do this again, abandon and ignore some systems, providing no fixes, basically leaving the customer with chronic problems - how does this instill confidence I should continue to do business with you?"
And yes, the really frustrating thing about this is that everything else is just fine on my laptop too, it works fine and does everything within its capabilities -- except this nasty driver bug. This is a big deal, you can't continue to deal with these issues (that happen randomly) and enjoy the experience, only a few things can remedy this... not all I really want to do...
-> Use the MS provided generic driver - yuk.
-> See if upgrading to Windows 10 fixes the issue or provides a better generic display driver - yuk as well (for me anyway).
-> Install an addon card (eGPU) - expensive if you can do it, better off buying a new system. Search Youtube if interested - install an egpu in your laptop. I like learning, kinda cool but not really a clean option.
-> Install a flavor of Linux - this will work but you'll likely not find a suitable software replacement for all your apps (my experience). I'm actually going to do this with this laptop until it finally kicks the bucket. Might install Mint, Pop_OS!, who knows. I've run Mint live for a week or so and the OS is fine, no issues, everything worked. I just couldn't find alternatives that I like for every little portable app I use. I'm sorry, I've listened to all the Linux fans and it's just not true, Linux has hundreds of OSes but little in the way of good alternatives in the way of apps. Let me rephrase this,
for me the apps were a step down, kinda clunky.
-> Buy Apple - take out a loan - really, can I borrow some money!

This is my fix: Build a new desktop system with known stable components. I have used AMD since the early 90s in all my builds, they were a close second to Intel offerings but were the best bang for the buck and performed to my expectations for what I needed. I'm disappointed in AMD over this issue and I think I will only use Intel from now on. I will never buy another Lenovo product - horrible service, the spyware issues... I'm sure my head is in the sand here, the industry has changed and the consumer has fewer choices than in years past... see below!
I'm not at all sure about the future of the Windows OS. I have no idea what kind of stagnation, staleness, chronic beta-testing-stage Windows 10 will be 5 years from now. I don't think for most users this will ever matter, most people in my orbit don't care - they don't bother ever looking under the hood. OTOH, for people like me who have always enjoyed the building process and getting under the hood, we aren't sure about Windows 10 being MS's last OS, the Apple and Linux offerings are alternatives but not great ones.
I'm really uninspired right now with the options I see, this is really only my opinion but it's how I see things. So for now I tolerate this nasty bug. Liz81, the only thing I can see you doing and not spending more money is to consider installing Windows 10 on your system, you may qualify for a free upgrade. I would do my research first, make damn sure upgrading will fix the issue. BTW, I would do a clean, fresh install, not an actual upgrade. If you haven't already, you might consider an SSD too instead of your old spinning HDD. I haven't done this so please see if it's doable but, you may be able to install 10 on your new drive and if it isn't all it's cracked up to be simply remove the drive and reinstall the old drive with 8.1 on it. I would verify that this is doable, re-activation of 8.1 issues may exist. You can use the new SSD down the road if 10 doesn't work out.
Sorry for being such a
