Solved transfer the OS from HDD to new SSD

Create the Windows 8.1 iso file, burn to dvd and do a clean install of Windows 8.1 to the ssd....

or.....

You have to shrink C so it and the 1st 2 partitions (3 total) will fit onto the ssd if you want to clone, much more complicated then a clean install if you don`t know how to do it.

I must have explained it wrong. if there's only the SSD in the laptop (hdd removed), the computer wont boot, just goes to BIOS. if both are in, the computer boot and the SSD 'works' .. as in, its there and I can use it, its just that it doesn't have windows 8.1 on it, even tho I cloned it

finished the recovery... AMOEI don't work for the migration because they say my OS is on a GPT disk and i'd have to buy their professional version. should I go ahead and do that ?

With the Paragon toiol you have to do no prep work at all. You put your new SSD into a USB caddy - that's all. Paragon finds it automatically, formats and aligns it, sets defrag off, etc. Real, real easy. It's all automatic with 3 clicks only.

Good morning from Germany, I just updated my post #5 after reading post #26 that only the pro version does gpt, I didn't know that. Sorry. I used it with windows 7. Another trick with Windows 7 and MBR was to shrink the C: partition so it and the boot partition were about 7-10% smaller than the ssd, then make a backup and system image´using windows backup, pop in your recovery disk, switch drives, boot to cd, recover from system image, easy and no problem. With windows 8.1 you can do it from command prompt(it's hidden for "normal users" now because of the refresh and reinstall options). Which kinda bites because you do have to jump thru hoops when you have a new disk.

Glad your up and running now! It's never a waste of time to try to help someone. When I was a lurker here, it was threads like these that helped me by reading what worked or didn't. Now enjoy real speed with your SSD.
