Windows 8.1 preview ISO's to be released by Microsoft

In a message on the MyDigitalLife forums, Neowin forum member FaiKee has posted what he says are extracts from an official Windows 8.1 Preview Q&A that will go live on Microsoft's website on June 26. The Q&A states the Windows 8.1 Preview will also be available for download as an ISO file in addition to the Windows Store direct update.

BUG - the start menu button opens up a screen full of kiddie squares, can't even see the taskbar.

That is a bad one.

On the plus side, if you type "start", it offers you start8 , the famous start menu replacement.

Not pretty even in Hot Pink.

Oh well back to MS' real OS, the one with a desktop experience.

Hey, it's only what's needed to do the world's real work. ;)

Didn't see a notification centre, might be one somewhere.

I have escaped to the sanity of Ubuntu for the time being.

Will have another wrestle with 8.1 when I am feeling patient.

From the Classic shell forums (posted by user fresnogamer):

"The first thing I noticed is the Windows start button under the classic shell start button. I restarted a couple of times but it was still there. So I researched online how to disable the official Windows start button. No luck.

At the end of the day I just disabled the Classic Shell start button. Now when I click on the start button it shows the Windows start screen and when I use the Windows key I get Classic Shell. For now this works for me because I usually use the Windows button to get the start menu.

If anyone else has a better solution, please let me know.

Thanks all!"

We shall see how long it takes for them to get around MS on this one. I have a feeling though that they will get it working and then MS will kill it again with the RTM....

Thanks for the update. Fingers crossed that its available although there has been zero mention in any of the reviews.

I don't use any 3rd party Start menu buttons or any of that stuff.

That said, I'm not surprised 8.1 broke those. In fact I kind of suspected it would, which is also part of the reason I never bothered with trying them. I wanted to see what 8.1 had to offer before going that route.

Anyway I'm getting ready to try 8.1 on my VM to see what all the fuss is about before I dare put it on my Win 8 lappy. Though reading about the uninstall hoops before installing the final is something of a put off. I don't think I'll be installing this on my laptop until final.

Took about 35 Minutes for the complete install, to the Metro screen. I chose a dual boot on my test machine, a very average Dell i3. It set up a dual boot automatically, with the other Windows 8 OS. Not sure how the keys work for other methods of install, but I used a TechNet ISO, with the supplied key. So far it has no mind blowing differences, but these are early days to check it out. I had an early hiccup, as, whilst entering the web, it suddenly decided to put in a new graphics driver, which I had not encountered in Windows 8. I had to get back into the display options to sort out the resolution, etc. That was a standard Intel Graphics HD Laptop chip. Intel were certainly on the ball with that one!
Task bar properties, for those who cannot find the boot to desktop function:

For the Windows 8 "All Apps" you must, as in the builds, select the small down arrow , l/h side, on the metro screen.
Surprising. When I checked in to the updates, there were four waiting! Bit quick for an immediate installation.
fwiw. Ccleaner (ver 403) ran without a hitch, including the reg clean facility. Apparently no harm done.
Modernmix also worked 100%

Use several different computers during a day, so specs are irrelevant.
Well I tried again this morning, after receiving an email saying 8.1 is ready. Subtle difference though on dl page it mentions having to have EN-US as base language. So I took off EN-UK and tried to install, still getting an error about not being applicable for computer. Anybody got 8.1 working on UK computer using windows store?

English(uk) isn't going to be supported

This error will occur if:
From note box at top of tutorial:
The base language of your OS (the language chosen during setup) is outside one of the*13 supported languages for Windows 8.1 Preview.
Please note that specific regional versions, such as English (United Kingdom) and Portuguese (Portugal), are not included among the supported languages.
You are running Windows 8 Enterprise. If one of these conditions applies to you, Windows 8 customers will be able to install Windows 8.1 Preview using the ISO image once they become available.
*However if you have Windows RT, you cannot install from an ISO file – you can only install Windows RT 8.1 Preview if your original OS language was one of the 13 supported languages.

so we have got to install the iso thanks Microsoft
