Now I know Windows Media Player doesn't play all the codecs in the world but for .avi files and such it's a charm and even bluray files. Well I can bring video back to Media Player on Windows 8. If anyone is interested please post your questions and concerns.
If enough people want this I'll create a tutorial.
Thank you.

Better yet, you can download VLC Player, which is far superior to WMP. One of the limitations of WMP is that it will not play DVDs with audio that you have created with video captured from any Hauppauge card.

I haven't, but I'm using PowerDVD v10 at present.
It works like a charm (pun unintentional) on Windows 8, as does v9.
Hope this helps someone.

I was ready to buy PowerDVD ($60, ouch!) but then a coworker told me about a free media player called VLC Player. I downloaded it and it works very well and plays all of the video formats I have, including the FLV format.

I'm using K-Lite Codec Pack in combination with Windows Media Player. This way it will playback every source of video and audio available in the market. Have been using this since 2007 and it never let me down.
As for DVD playback I have a licence for the Nero Burning ROM suite. It contains a DVD playback software. Don't use it very much, most of the time I copy the DVD to my HDD and stream it to the television

I was right it is PowerDVD 10 I have, it came with the Notebook by Asus. I requested a license key from Microsoft for Media Player but as I only have the basic Windows 8 that came with it can't use it.
Mind you I did download the Microsoft Live Essentials pack and that includes Media Player. I don't think it's worth me upgrading to Pro so I can use the key, I can play DVDs I can play TV programs via Sky Go so I don't think I need to.
I've got a bit of time yet to make my mind up.
