@pepanee one way to "cheat" may be to look for a "touch" utility that will update the modification dates of files according to some rule or look for an AHK program that can do it. Then just hit the Last Modified column to sort.

@TechnoMadge A dollar per MB? I think I paid $20 to get a set of 9 16 KB memory chips to bring my XT Clone from 512 KB to the full complement of 640 KB. The 9th chip was in case the system required a parity chip. Fortunately mine did not since I bent one of the legs on one of the chips. The spare 9th chip saved me another trip to the EggHead shop. The Leading Edge Model D had a hole underneath the front bezel just large enough to squeeze my hand through without ripping the entire system apart. Having to insert the ships by feel is why one got bent. But I remember my older brother, when he worked for DEC talking about a new super mini-computer that would have a GB of main system ram. The idea was to suck the entire database from disk into ram for super fast queries. heh heh heh

On the filename numbering bit, my old Philips MP3 player insisted on "sorting" files in the order originally written to the flash memory. So I would prefix them with 01_ 02_ etc. then run FatSorter utility to set the file creation dates to force the player to comply.

Yeah, I remember the horror stories, that came from friends who wanted to add ram to their Trash 80. You almost had to mortgage the farm to buy ram in those early days.

MilesAhead: I want to keep the folder sorting method by name. Date Modified will mess up the order of everything else in there.
Anyways, no worries about this. I just thought it would be slightly more convenient if that 'rule' existed.
    Thanks all.

Sorry we did not come up with anything. When you think about it, there are so many user written modules hooked into Explorer now you would think there would be a hook for a user written compare method to feed to the shell for custom sorting. 21 years since W95 and still no go. Not likely to see it now as the desktop fades away.

Yea.. you're right. It'll probably never catch on. But who knows, maybe the this 'fad' of the Desktop style computing will come back in the future.. just like how you hear all these techno 8-bit remixes of songs that show up every now and then.

I just hope I don't have to use 8 track tape to back up my data on "the desktop of the future."
